Just like to get your thoughts on Heffernan when he came to us most melb supporters were excited. But he has been very disappointed at the moment struggled last year and not getting a game this year. So what was your thoughts on him when he played for ESS. Are we expecting too much.

And by the way great win against the Pies

I liked him, but he did go off the boil from mid 2001 after coming back from a knee injury and never seemed to regain confidence. Thought he was going to be a real gun until then. A lost of his best work goes unnoticed, a lot of 1%'s...but he's not half the player he should be, much like Blumfield. I don't think he's a lost cause for you yet though.

I've never made it a secret that i thought he was highly overated by Essendon supporters when he was with us. Can't find the ball, pretty average tagger, average skills. His performances were never really scrutinised because Essendon had so many champions taking the spotlight, but when he (and others) in 2002 were under the pump and expected to take the next step he was clearly unable to do so.

There was a thread about Heffernan possibly returning to Essendon at the the end of the season on Bomberblitz. The majority said we should only have him back if he came at a basement bargain price. I think he is damaged goods and i'd rather not have him back at all. I do hope he can turn his form around at Melbourne though.

Heffernan, Blumfield, Caracella, Henneman.

The next stars to take the next step. Where are they now?

Heffernan: struggling to make it at another club due to skill errors and lack of intent. On his last legs and will probably be traded or delisted if not on contract. Injuries took their toll.

Blumfield: struggling to make it at a club that is struggling to make it. Injuries have ruined him and he is finding it hard to make it back. IMO was lucky to be a premiership player. IMO we should have traded him to Sydney when he wanted to go.

Caracella: has played a number of games at Brisbane. Would still fit in at Essendon IMO and was the one I was disappointed to lose. We traded well in a three way deal to end up with Cupido & McPhee so we are not too bad off.

Henneman: who?? Should have been traded last year IMO.

I think you could add Ted Richards to that list, and probably Mark McVeigh too.
Richards will be 5th best tall option by year's end
McVeigh just looks to be very similar to the others listed.
Looks valuable right now, but easliy replaced.
I can't see him winning a game off his own boot, or doing any better than whoever is replacing him over the last 3 weeks.

i think you're being a bit harsh on blumfield. his 2000 season was excellent, and he played very well in the finals as well. after that, he, like heffernan, dropped away markedly, partly due to injuries though. i don't think we miss any of them.

i agree with mero about richards, i don't think he will ever make it. however, mcveigh became quite a handy defender last year. true, he will never win a game off his own boot, but he is a handy role player.

I think you are being very harsh on all of them.

Agreed Heffernan has not lived up to the hype - but go back to 99 and look at how he played then. He could get it and his evasive skills were excellent. Now he is a shell of a player and prob. will forever be just that.

Blumfield has had injuries destroy his career. Could have won the Norm Smith in 2000 and I still think he was the best over-head mark for his size. Was disappointed to see him go but it lokos like it was right considering all his injuries.

Caracella wanted more money - GOOD BLOODY RIDDANCE you soft cheap (because he never worked hard enough) penny pincher.

Richards is exactly as you guys siad - nothing more than a 4th/5th tall. handy at best.

McVeigh however has turned himself into a very good back-pocket/run with player and when he gets back from injury you wil remember how much we miss him from our back 6 currently. Very good kick and I think you will fnd, gone are the days of being a show pony. He is working harder and last year started getting results on the board. Keep him and get his brother to join us!!

I totally don't agree with what everyone is saying about teddy richards. The only reason everyone thinks he wont make it is because he isn't being given a chance. And when he is put in the team he is being played out of position in the back line. Finally on sunday he was put in the forward line in the 2nd half and stood up. But i wont be surprised if he is dropped or played on the bench next week. Definitely not fair on poor Ted.

At the risk of being asked to leave your board, which I will do if asked, may I say as an Eagles supporter that I am impressed with Richards. Would gladly have him at our club. I would suggest that you are a touch harsh on Ted. You guys are spoilt by having Lloyd ,Lucas and Hillie who all present well in the forward line. I believe that Richards is starved of opportunities due to your abundance of forward talent. I see him as being a match winner as he needs very few touches to score 3 goals and quickly as well. My thoughts only.

I think some of you guys are being way harsh about Mark McVeigh, I rate him as one of our most important defenders. He dosn't need 15-20 possessions to have a really good game, his performances on Medhurst late last year proved this. When he returns (which most likely will be this week), it will be able to release Andrew Welsh up the ground a bit more. McVeigh can be a very handy small forward too.

Ted Richards is just being starved of opportunities at the moment, while we all love him he has a bit more work to do to gain a regular spot in the Bomber team. There is defitatnly a bright and promising future for him at Essendon though.

I would definitely take back Heffernan and Blumfield on minimum wage at year end. We nearly gave them more than twice that last year and they both produced some stunning performances in the red and black. Blumfield could slot in nicely if he got over his injuries and Heffernan’s problem is Melbourne’s abundance of midfielders.
As for McVeigh, he is in our best 22 according to the selection committee, but I just don’t like the idea of underachieving MF/forwards becoming backmen. It hasn’t worked with Mercuri either.
Richards is our 5th best forward at best and is yet to play a genuinely impressive game.
Henneman would not get a game at any other club.

BRING BACK HEFF AND BLUMFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't think you'd ever be kicked off THIS board for having a point of view that some Bombers share with you ;)

Teddy needs to get more Footy wares knowledge and understand what's also going on around him, and realise that not every Ball kicked in his vicinity is for HIM.... tends to get in Lloyd's way a lot...

I like Teddy but he is Never going to get a go up forward ahead of the likes of Lloyd, Cupido, Hird, Lucas and Hille (when he's there)

i reckon he would make a good Full Back

what's Mercuri got to do with it? McVeigh was very good for us last year.

anyone hear him on 3AW last night? I can see now why people down at Windy Hill used to tout him as a future captain.. maybe he doesn't have it in him as a player, but the kid knows his football. Chris Heffernan might have a career as a coach when his playing days are over.

Let's not forget Sam Hunt. The next 'Dustin Fletcher'!

I didn't hear him on 3AW. If you remember, what stuff was he saying?
I'm a big fan of Heff, but never really get to hear much of what he has to say.

Thanks for that.

I was the most disappointed to see Chris Heffernan leave out of those 3 guys. would love to get him back next year cheaply. still think he has a very smart footy brain and would still have a lot to offer a club.
