There is progress
http://www.TheVFAProject.org

1897-1954 player data is nearly complete
1955+ player data is about 50% complete (only goal kickers and best and fairest)
The website has a spreadsheet indicating coverage of player data.
Ladders are still being automatically generated from games and may contain errors where games were annulled. Fixing this is on the to-do list.

There are now 19000 players in the database
Of these over 3500 played in the VFL

There are over 320,000 player to game references.
If the data is 99% correct then there are 3200+ errors

Thanks to WhiteHartLane23, Wal Williams and John Ficara
WhiteHartLane23 supplied more data for 1900-1902 seasons - This must have been an amazing amount of work, as these early seasons are very hard to work with.
Wal Williams has supplied player databases for all vfa clubs, I have been cross checking against these.
John Ficara has supplied resources I did not know existed and his copies of club annual reports and VFA records have been of much use.

If anyone has the quarter by Quarter scores and goalkickers for Sunshines games in the 1989 season. I would like to add them to the database.

Love your VFA Project site, Michael. You should have a "Contact Us" function on it so people can give you information and corrections. I had to trace you through this site to contact you.

North Melbourne player Sicily was John not Thomas. Thomas was his father's name.

Keep up the good work.

Michael

Apologies all - That you for the corrections. I am still going with the database, Thank you very much for the corrections....There are just a few :)

My back end database is actually a bit more up to date and has more accurate scores and venues for many games...
My post 1954 data is still very weak..and I have put my recent efforts into the 1877-1896 era.

If anyone wants to have a look at the back end, I am providing it here. This is a snapshot, I am still updating it as I go.
Remember that this is designed just for me so excuse the layout.
There is a player table - this includes games played - but only those in the database so it is incorrect for players post 1954
There is a games table and a results table. (Form1 can be used to see this a bit better)
There is a player to game table where most of the work is occuring.

My Access Database

My recent struggles have been with 1877-1878. There does not seem to be an easy way to balance the concept of VFA and the Metropolitan Premiership. For example in 1878 Ballarat played more games against Melbourne Teams than Geelong did. I am considering setting out those two seasons with the ladder for the Metro-Premiership, but listing most of the senior Country teams and Metro Junior teams.

I have also noticed in these early games, many games were cancelled and I think that listing these cancelled games provides a more accurate reflection of the era.

I know there are a few problems in the database - for example I think I have some data duplicated for one of the years.

I am also struggling on the way to count games.

In 1878 Essendon were not a senior team, but they played against senior teams and these games were counted toward the premiership. So should Essendon players games played in 1878 count toward their total games played...I suppose that YES they were VFA games, YES they were Premiership games and NO they were not senior games.

Same with games for Representative games, YES to VFA games, NO to Premiership games and YES to senior game.

I nearly need separate counts for
VFA Games
Club Games
Premiership Games
Senior Games

As there is a variation in the definition for each.

I understood Essendon became a VFA senior team in 1878.
At the AGM they decided to play as a senior club. (Weekly Times April 06 1878 p5 & Weekly Times April 10 p6)

Yes...but Essendon played five Senior games as part of their 1877 season. (albeit 25 v 20). But these games counted toward the premiership

For example Alexander McCracken played in the 8-Aug game against Melbourne
For McCracken , this is a club game, a premiership game, and a VFA game, but not a senior game.

The AFL has thought of all these concepts under the same banner, but other codes such as soccer do not as clubs play in different competitions and there are different senior competitions.

As a VFA supporter of 70+ years I would like to say a very big thank you to you for putting in the time and hours doing this very much appreciated work. All power to you.

It looks like the Essendon v South Melb at East Melbourne Ground is the biggest ever VFA H&A crowd.

I also note that the match below had 34,121 at the Lake Oval South Melbourne seemed to get same very big crowds in that era.

It also looks like according to your graphs that the 1945 Coburg v Williamstown is the biggest H&A VFA match since the 1896 VFL breakaway.

In latter years the 18.000 at the Sandringham v Port Melb match at the Beach Road Oval in 1963 with Barassi and Skilton playing for Port and Big Bad Barry Harrison playing for Sandy as Captain Coach is the biggest!
I was at that match and it was a massive crowd.

Thanks - A lot of people have contributed to the effort.

Attendance data is incomplete..but you are right, third biggest. Crowds appear to drop off in the 1890s...

The Australasian has a ladder for 1877 of junior teams that has Essendon in it. They finished second behind West Melbourne.
There is also a ladder of senior teams comprising of Carlton, Melbourne, Hotham, Albert Park and St.Kilda.
Probably October 13 edition as there was Peter Pindar's season review.
Fits in with the April AGM of 1878, a junior team in 1877 which became a senior team in 1878

Crowds at the footy dropped off dramatically 1892 onwards due to the severe economic crisis in Australia. Victoria was hit the hardest. Many people including a lot of VFA footballers went West to the Kalgoorlie Gold Fields hoping to strike it lucky.

Sorry...it is probably my language...I agree that Essendon was a Junior team in 1877.... but they did play some of their games against senior teams and these matches counted toward the senior premiership, I have called these "Senior games" even though Essendon was a junior team...

I pull my hair out trying to weave my way around this terminology.

Consider Carlton in 1877 (From Pindar) - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article143270959
Their total of 21 games include only 10 games against other Metropolitan Senior clubs. 6 games against Junior teams, two games against Warratah (one Victorian rules and one rugby game) and three games against Country teams (Geelong, Barwon and Ballarat).

Only 4 of StKilda's 17 games were played against Metropolitan Senior Teams.

Rob Hess also pointed out that there was a huge cycling craze in Victoria at the time and many switched to cycling...which I thought was interesting.

Considering the Melbourne pop was around 500,000 in 1880-90s those crowds are outstanding! Equivalent to 360,000 today with our 5 million pop.

OK.....I am sure there are going to be a few different views, but here is a starting point for the difference between what is a 'Senior Game', a 'Premiership Game' or a 'VFA game'. There terms are often used to mean the same thing, especially in the AFL era where 'Elite Competition' is used more often. But in the 1870's there are big differences "to me" for these terms.

Very interesting questions indeed. Do you have a definition of 'VFA Umbrella Game' yet, or will the definition depend upon the data?

My opinions on some of these:

* Port Melbourne v South Adelaide 1978 - definitely a senior game

* Port Melbourne v Caulfield 1977 - could be considered a premiership game. Just a different premiership (i.e. Centenary Cup v the usual VFA premiership). In 1977, the VFA was at pains to express that Centenary Cup matches should be treated as fully-fledged VFA games.

* Williamstown v Yarraville 1957 - do you have any more information about this competition? I don't remember seeing anything about a night premiership during my recent research.

* Northcote v Prahran 1962 - should have the same status as Centenary Cup matches, whatever that ends up being.

I'm also interested in the status of matches played by Moorabbin in 1987, Mordialloc in 1988, Sunshine in 1989 and Brunswick-Broadmeadows in 1991. All of these clubs played a number of matches before withdrawing from the competition. Moorabbin's two matches in 1987 were always counted as VFA premiership matches simply because no re-draw was required, and a bye could be substituted for the rest of the season. However, re-draws were necessary in 1988, 1989 and 1991, and matches played by those three clubs in those years have generally been ignored completely because the VFA didn't want them to affect the ladders. My opinion is that the 1988, 1989 and 1991 matches should be treated as VFA premiership games, albeit matches that did not count towards the ladders. Everyone involved in these matches at the time believed they were seeing a VFA match. And there are some important records attached - Dandenong's massive score of 44.29 v Brunswick in 1991, Brunswick's 53.15 at Sunshine in 1989 (Griffiths 18 goals), and Preston's 49.21 v Sunshine in 1989. Also Moose Pretto kicked 25 goals in these matches which makes his total with Oakleigh 879 instead of 854.

Oops they were night games within the Senior premiership

I totally agree that the status of those games where teams left the premiership should count in players totals

There are also Lightning Premierships but I probably would not count those in the same category

In terms of 'VFA Umbrella Game' .... I just don't have a good definition... I was hoping that making the table would make it clearer to myself.. I started with the term "VFA Game" but is often used as a proxy for a VFA competition game so I used something else.

Sat 16 Apr 1960 VFA Oakleigh v Dandenong was most likely played at Camberwell (to be confirmed)

Oakleigh played all their matches in 1960 at the Camberwell Sports Ground while their home ground was being resurfaced.
They also won the VFA premiership in 1960 beating Sandringham easily.

The article below April 7 - 1960 predates Round One - I will make the change (You wont see it for a while though)

A senior football Database for the 20th Century
Definitely the one thing I would contribute to.
With the sheer number of different leagues that existed between 1900 and 1999, say an average of 400 leagues (including separate divisions) across the country, with an average of roughly 90 games per season, that could come out to about 3.5 million scores to collect. I'd say you could collect about 50% of those online through Trove, digitized records and documents, and maybe a further 40% through what's not on Trove.
Entering who played in each match would be nigh on impossible. Most records are probably lost to time.
Any scores from the 21st century is freely available on Phil Gluyas's website. At some point in the near future he will upload his whole project there, though I have a feeling that only ladders will be available. A valuable historical collection nonetheless.
