Hi could someone please inform me on how the tracing system on the net works. I recently went on Mirc [a chat program} acting like a kid from school using his nick and that. I got a call from my teacher saying they were looking for the kid responsible and that they might call the police. Is it too late, can the Police track me down. I have deleted Mirc. If they do find out can they do anything.

Probably. If they can find someone who gives a **** to chase it up.

You'll have to reformat your computer, otherwise it'll be a piece of cake for them to find proof that you had mIRC on there. Your ISP also probably has records of you downloading the installer package, and of you sending data packets that conform to IRC traffic, so you'll need to reformat their servers as well. The site you downloaded mIRC from will have your IP on record too, so their send data will have to be deleted as well.

Then there's the small matter of the NSA's Echelon system, which has complete records of everything you've ever looked at or written on the Internet...

But would the police even worry about it. Dont they have to get permission, isn't it like tapping a phone. And if they didn't have my i.p how would they get it now. I mean i only said like i was going to kill him over the net that ant that bad.

Haha. Stop it. The poor kid is ****ting his pants.

Don't even worry about it. The cops have better things to do.

Christ, they haven't even got the resources to stop scam internet sites soliciting money let alone worry about something that went on on IRC.

BTW, doesn't the Echleon system only apply to America?

Of course!! I'm mean there's not going to be any Internet traffic worth intercepting outside of the states is there.

Nope, it's like finding a letter you've already written. If they have reason to think it exists, they can get it. So you'll have to get rid of the evidence completely like I said above. And you don't think the cops will care? Threatening to kill someone is a serious offence, it carries AT MINIMUM a weekend detention jail term, even for a minor.
And if they didn't have my i.p how would they get it now. I mean i only said like i was going to kill him over the net that ant that bad.
Your ISP has complete records of your login times and what IP you were using at the time. The cops can get a bit of evidence of what you were doing in the past, and if that looks incriminating they can force your ISP to keep copies of all your present Internet traffic (sites you visit, files you download, everything). Cybercrime is being taken very seriously these days, mainly because the cops are being given lots more funding to deal with technology crimes, rather than for having officers walking the streets.

It's interesting enough. For starters you're taking a little bit of a risk by posting what you have. There are plenty of law and order obsessives on these boards who believe they would be doing a community service by reporting this post to the authorities (and I don't mean Bluey). All it would then take is a police request to Bluey or whoever to reveal whatever details you've provided to Bigfooty. Hope you were sensible enough not to give any accurate information when registering. Even if you are making this whole thing up, it may still be looked upon in a dim light. Also if nobody reports this, doesn't mean it won't be found after turning up on a google search.

And then there is the issue of non-reporting of a crime. If you have admitted a crime, then the people who read this, as well as Bigfooty itself may be under a legal obligation to report this. And that opens another can of worms, as although this board is all about aussie footy, it would also fall under US jurisdition as Bigfooty is phyiscally in the US and is owned by an American resident in America.

I hope you realise your teacher is lieing (assuming your story is true). Its the first thing teachers do when they want a kid to own up, they say "the other kid confessed it all, its better if you come clean" or "we had an annonymous person come forward and say it was you", etc. She's talking out of her arse, she didn't call the cops, and you won't get in trouble. Keep your mouth shut, get your parents to back you up and teachers are no scarier than torch cops (security guards).

All the crap that gets said on MIRC is much worse than what you did.

The don't keep records of chat transcripts though, it's impossible. Ever logged one of you IRC sessions and looked at the size of the log? (of just one channel not several thousand)

Secondly, IP addresses on most IRC networks (Ausnet example) mask the IP with their on Virtual Ip, it'd read "username@vw16553.iprimus.net.au" where the real IP is 255.198.76.1. Unless you have IRCOP rights, you won't be seeing the real ip.

If your real worried about it use an anynomous proxy. Sure, you can be tracked down, but it's a major pain in the arse and cops rarely bother chasing it up unless it's kiddie pr0n.

The Echleon was designed to track emails. Several large ISP's in the US are part of it from memory.

This is a bit stupid of me to say this, but that is far from a real IP used for irc/home.

For starters for anyone interested in IP addressing, 255.*.*.* is a broadcast IP address used to send packets to every node on that network.

192-223.N.N.H would be what mIRC and other aussie users have for an IP.

for example, 203.45.24.22

sorry, i was bored ;)

Yes, you do have to much time.

I was using that one as an example. I feared it would have been censored had I used an actual IP, hence the 255.

You people enjoy spoiling my fun, don't you? :D ;) Wish you'd given me longer, I could have found a way to bring the Illuminati into it as well!

Heh. Remember some networks thought DONT mask ip's. ;)

You probably could have corrected me. Carnivore was the project that tracks emails...

Echleon, well that is another story. :p

Actually I've had a couple of e-mails from the police about things written on this site. Seeing as it is all hosted in the US and in the name of a US citizen they leave me alone when I tell them what they legally have to do to get the owner to hand over information about a user.

But your local school - they can and will seek to make an example of you.

Telling someone that you'd kill them is something their computer crimes division likes to follow up on if they know it is all local as they are usually frustrated in their attempts because of the international nature of the web.

Keep looking over your shoulder...
