Help with ripping DVDs

Hey guys,
My nonno is the biggest movie fan I have ever met and has a collection to back that claim up.
He wants to rip them all and put them on a hard drive for when he travels. Unfortunately I havent been able to find any decent programs.
Any suggestions? Free ones would be the best thanks.

2 steps i would use

rip them to the hard drive using DVD decrypter

then convert the ripped DVD to an xvid MP4 using Handbrake

both are free.

i've used these 2 programs for doing my dvd collection (about 300), and the quality is sensational

How long did it take per per movie?

generally around 15 mins to rip the movie to the hard drive, then probably 2 hours to convert it

DVD Shrink to rip & shrink & DVD Decrypter to burn but make sure you read the instructions to set it all up.

Takes about 10 - 20 mins depending on the size of the movie & what you have in your box.

If you're happy to put down some coin the combo of AnyDVD and Nero Recode allows you to rip to MP4 straight from the disc. Pretty cool if you ask me
