can i play xbox games that i buy in the USA on the console which i bought here in australia?? or do i need that mod chip?

You need a chip.

But be careful, as apparently you can't use a chipped Xbox if you want Xbox Live.

Some now have the ability to be switched off, or so they say. Whether the switching off actually works is another matter altogether.

And all you have to do to be banned is to leave it on just once while you're connected to Live, and it bans your machine for good.
