Essendon re-sign Solomon and eye off Brown
October 15, 2003 - 4:38PM

Essendon AFL defender Dean Solomon has had a change of heart and will remain at Windy Hill.

Solomon, 23, quit the Bombers last week and was the target of a lucrative four-year offer from Richmond.

But after being contacted by coach Kevin Sheedy and several leading Essendon players, he was convinced to stay.

"As I have said all along, (Solomon) is a key player at this club and we always remained hopeful that he would be with us in 2004 and beyond," Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said in a statement.

"We believe that Dean has made the right decision in terms of his long-term playing future and personal development.

"It has been a tough couple of weeks for both Dean Solomon and this club.

"I look forward to sitting down with Dean and setting the record straight on a few issues.

"We will clear the air and he can get on with playing good football for this club next year and beyond."

The Bombers have also joined the chase for Western Bulldogs forward Nathan Brown hoping Brown's friendship with Solomon could be an attractive offer for him to join Essendon.

Negotiations between the Western Bulldogs and Brown's preferred option Richmond have collapsed with the Tigers refusing to meet the Bulldogs request of a quality player to replace Brown.

As much as I dislike Essendon, it will be justice to see Richmond end up with nothing but boiled lollies after this years trade period.
Their attempts at de-stabilising other clubs have hit an all time low.
The tigers are copping the fist of fury.

i think they are hoping he wants 350 gorillas a season to play with solly and also a team that can do well

yer doesnt sound like brown

Would Jacobs and Bolton equal the same amout of Browns pay packet? As much as i would love to see that happen, not just because brown is a good player but also because the tigers would get SQUAT! but in reality can't see it happening.

No way would Bolton and Jacobs be anywhere near Brown's salary. Brown has been offered 500K from Richmond, Essendon wouldn't be able to get close to that. Unless they rort the system, like they usually do!

DJ would be on around $160K, Bolton $110K. Remember Bolton signed his last deal when he was ****.

after trying to work it out it looks to me as if we could offer Brown 350,000 thats a rough estimate 20 grand each way... do we have the players to Cover both Bolton and Jacobs? Just thinking cause Courtney Johns is a KPP right if so is he ready to step up?

Apparent Sheedy said: We have "more than enough money" to re-sign Bolton and Jacobs and "improve our list with new players" on the radio tonight.
Going on this statement our cap is fine

yeah, but someone better tell Sheedy, that you can't cheat the cap any more. He's done it so many times, he's probably forgotten it's against the rules.

He has never done it...the club has..sheeds doesnt get involved with contracts thats the admin and football manager's job he just rates the players in importance and the admin work out their worth...anyway as a former plumber all those numbers and contracts would give him a headache.
