Can anyone shed some light on this extract from an article in The Age today...

The recruiting manager's position at Hawthorn was controversially vacated by John Turnbull after last year's drafts were completed, with the highly regarded recruiter seemingly the casualty of an internal political struggle.

Maybe he tried to recruit a decent coach.

Got me beat. We all thought the time of Turnbull's departure was very suspicious. I suspect they mean a political struggle over the actual recruiting role rather than anything more sinister.

Gary Buckenara was appointed "opposition forward scout" at the beginning of last year and is now in the running to become head recruiter. A whisper I heard (I stress just a whisper) was some people in the club wished to expand the recruiting and scouting department into a single group.

4 others are in the running, Rocket Rod Carter (who impressed me with his work with the NSW Rams last year) and three others who aren't named in the article, but I'm sure one would be Turnbull's assistant Greg Boxall.

I'd much prefer Carter to Buckenara.

If thats true, Ramma, it says something that the Port definition of `sackable' means not making grand finals, whereas at Hawthorn you can miss the finals two years in a row after one lucky season and only then have the question asked.

Get some balls, Hawthorn.

2 lucky seasons, you mean.....

Yep, you've been the better side the last few years - is that what you wanted to read Porthos??

As we've discussed before, a coach these days embraces so much more than just coaching. It's debatable whether Williams has or hasn't helped or hindered Port during their finals campaigns, but even you have admitted Choco isn't the greatest club representative. Acknowledging that Schwab is (an excellent club representative), and giving him an extra chance, may just have a little more 'balls' to it than taking the easy way out and sacking him - we'll know this season.

Let's hope that Port Adelaide choke again in the finals and I would like to see the look on Porthos's face when it happens again.:D:p

Wow, if your club is recruiting coaches to be `great representatives of the club' their eye is even more off the ball than I thought.

At least Hawthorn don't choke when they are playing in finals

Yeah and Mark Williams so just so respected Porthos. Not.
I didn't think he was.

We recruited Mark Williams to `win games' not `be a great representative of the club'. That seems to be the major difference here.

Of course it's not (stop trolling), but you need the whole package - there's only one really successful coach each year, but not ALL 15 clubs then turn around and look for a new one!!
I have no doubt that if Williams was more media-friendly, not antagonistic towards anyone and everyone (particularly his sponsors!), and not the arrogant person he is generally made out to be (rightly or wrongly), the growing speculation about his tenure would be non-existant.

Hey Porthos, Do you want a bet on what you have just told us?

If you are wrong, you will have to put your money where your mouth is and sign up as a Hawthorn Member.

If the Hawthorn supporters are wrong we will all buy a Port Adelaide Membership.

Do you think that is a good idea?

I dunno. I reckon most Port fans recognise that there are a lot of nice guys around, but most of them can't coach. You don't get the coaching job at Port for being politically correct.

Nah, I reckon Hawthorn fans get the better end of the deal as pet memberships at Port are about half the price of adult Hawthorn memberships.

Oh trust me, we'd recruit Pagan in a microsecond.

Not while Mark was out of contract.

So one could conclude then that you AREN'T happy with your current coach - is that because he's not successful enough to satisfy Port's philosophy of employing coaches to 'win games', or is it because Pagan is more of a 'complete package' and 'club representative' than Williams????

Pagan has two things that Mark doesn't: A good track record, including finals, and a tough long kicking game plan based around having a star CHF.

Don't you remember the 2001 finals series? Thats right the nice guy got over the top of the coach who 'wins games'. Di@khead.
