NAB cup is as irrelevant as any thing can get now a days.

Would it make more sense if the teams would win more?

I reckon the Winner should a fancy cup and what not ... AND pick 4 or 6 in the draft in that year.

Teams would compete more and it would make it more interesting to watch.

runners up get pick 12 or 11 double what ever the winner gets

I dunno about a pick that early. Maybe a pick immediately after your first round draft pick, and the runner gets another pick at the end of the first round.

This idea has definite merit, but the reward could never be given whilst the format remains as it is this year.

Perhaps the winner could receive the only mini-draft pick for that year.

Pretty unfair... the NAB Cup is only a warm up and for coaches and players to try different things like us looking at Contin, Derickx etc... and looking at Astbury shine when there was no pressure.

I like the idea of a pick, but this should be the system.

The winner gets a priority pick directly after their initial first round pick.

Teams who would finish last would not likely win the competition and if the premiers had won, there pick wouldn't be so high. It does create competition.

Great thread - I really do like the idea. You should post this in the main board.

to say pick one or two could be offered to the winner.. which wouldn't happen.

Or he concept of the lottery Draft and the team that wins gets the chance to pick at random a number.

and the number they pull from one to twenty and teh runners up get a random pick from 10 to 20

an event straight after the game can be held and the coaches or presidents come out and pick a ball out of the NAB cup with the number on it

Say we win the NAB Cup, and finish 8th in the H+A season. In a normal season we would get pick 11, so we would get pick 12 for winning the Preseason Comp. Carlton are runners up and finish 2nd, so they get pick 17, and Pick 19. The two other finalists get a pick at the end of their second round.

Although it may seem silly, even if you make the final 4, you will stick get a pick addition, which is worth fighting for.

So:

Richmond 1st PS Comp, 8th overall: Picks 11, 12.
Carlton 2nd PS Comp, 2nd overall: Picks 17, 19.
Collingwood Tied 3rd, 1st overall: Picks 18, 2nd round draft pick will be pick 37, so they get pick 38.
Hawthorn Tied 3rd, finished 3rd: Picks 16, 2nd round draft pick would be 35, they get pick 36.

still think the lottery would be more exciting chance to get a good pick or a great pick

Don't like it at all..... the NAB cup is rubbish anyway and as someone pointed out merely there for practice and trials. Trying to make it count for something will stifle some of that development and trial. If they want to make the games meaningful, then lengthen the season and cut praccy matches to 1 or 2.

Also, the draft is there to try and even up the competition, not make it easier for better teams to get higher picks....

Yeah, but if then it would'nt be fair. The winner could draw pick 20, and the runner up could get pick 10. That wouldn't be fair.

ill re phrase it soz

Winner gets to choose from pick 1 to 10 and runners up gets pick 10 to 20

wouldnt care if the pies won or cats and they got a top ten pick ,, the would deserve it for winning the cup with teh chance of injury before teh full season if you know what i meen

What about getting the same pick as you got the previous Draft.... Thus giving the bottom sides extra incentive.

makes teams fight to become better not fall and tank

I think they should scrap the NAB cup and just have a few pre-season warm up games with nothing to play for and instead have an FA cup type tournament like they do in England later in the year. The best clubs in the VFL/WAFL/amateur/country etc etc comps around play in a knock out tournament and when they get into the later stages the AFL clubs play them. What makes the FA competition amazing is that clubs get their moment of fame, it gives guys who just missed out on that top level go at it against the games greats ...and sometimes...they win!!! Could be really prestigious just like the FA. Perhaps they could get the AFL clubs into the Foxtel Cup?!?!

Its about having a look at your kids and getting in some match practice

nothing more ... nothing less .

Got **** all to do with our entertainment value .

Accept it for what it is .

The season is a marathon as it is without going hammer and tongs for draft picks in February

Agreed..Pre season = Irrelevant for the season proper.
I don't like the picks idea at all TBH

There are very few teams that actually tank. Especially the last 2 seasons. Very little evidence that it works anyway. Who has won a flag as a result of tanking?

The AFL has put the system in place. The fact remains that generally poor teams are not very good and therefore don't win many games.

Regardless, involving any practice matches in part of a meaningful way is misguided. They are practice matches. End of story.

But that's the problem. They are not just practice matches. They have money attached to the outcomes and have implications for membership sales given their televised status. Which means clubs have to treat them more seriously, which in turn raises their intensity and reduces the amount of experimentation. Hence the OP suggesting that the level of reward for winning is not high enough.

Given that NAB Cup matches are a half-way house between practice matches and 'real' matches perhaps another suggestion might be to allocate reduced premiership points for winning games (as I've suggested elsewhere). One point for a NAB Cup/Lightning Premiership match (and more the grandfinalists) might be a fairer reward for the risks involved. It would certainly bump up interest. And would give new meaning to the idea of 'flying start'!

Yeah I agree. The season is long enough without having clubs pushing intensity into these games. They are good for football hungry supporter base.

Its an appetizer for the real stuff and that it is only that, makes Round 1 feel like Round 1 and not Round 2 or Round 4.

I honestly dont think that even if we won it that it would mean a hell of alot to me.

I believe that the bummers got there membership so high not only due to the hird factor but there performance in the nab cup.

And let's say the top teams try to crack into this game and in the process gain a top draf pick but make there squad tierd in the process gving other clubs a chance o climb.

Why are some just so narrow minded that the afl season is the only thing we should have ?

Soccer has the FA cup And they do seem to mind competing for this and risking players health... Let's do the same with the nab cup
