Sounded familiar to me too; and I've found the article - from a book called The 3AW Book of Footy Records:

"One of the more mind-boggling losing records of any team was
put together by Geelong West Under-19s in 1981. It was more the magnitude of the defeats which gave its record merit. In order, they were 275 points, 344, 238, 468, 161, 147, 506, 258, 141, 201, 183, 174, 159, 282, 251, 216 and 190. Surprisingly, the side actually won one game to blemish an amazing record, beating Caulfield by 10 points on 26 July. Caulfield had won by 161 points at the previous meeting! West ended the season
with 4525 points kicked against, 454 for and a percentage of 10! It beat this in 1987 by having 5530 points scored against, to 541 for an a percentage of 9.7. In 1983 and 1987 Geelong West had scores of 88.23, 92.30 and 110.27 recorded against it, which must have had the lads of the 1981 team thinking that perhaps
their defence wasn't that bad after all!"

Amazing stuff. Geelong West were on their last legs as a VFA club by then, I think 1987 might have been their last season.

You should chase this up Mobby. From memory, the scores would make your top 10 quite easily (Ross Gibbs kicked 20-30+ goals). PE lost the previous week by only a slightly less margin that may also be a top 10 contender. They even featured in the Sunday Mail speculating about the imminent demise of the club, didn't happen thankfully.

Thirty goals kicked by one man in a single game - or a goal every 3min20sec over the entire 100 minutes of the match.

That amazing feat was achieved by former Glenelg star Ross Gibbs at Port Elliot on Saturday.

Gibbs' goal spree is believed to be an Australian record for the most goals kicked by one person in a match.

The record books show that Paul Angelis kicked 29 goals playing for Ainslie against West Canberra in the ACTFL in 1984.

The flamboyant Gibbs, 35, who played 256 games for Glenelg, mainly in the back pocket, also kicked 10 behinds on Saturday for an overall tally of 30.10.

He was playing at full forward for Victor Harbor against Port Elliot in a Great Southern FL match.

Gibbs booted 9 goals in each of the first 2 quarters, 7 in the third term and 5 in the last.

Victor blitzed Port Elliot by 321 points, 52.21 to 2.0. Gibbs appeared to have the ball on a string, picking up 42 kicks and one handball. His final kick for the day, after the siren, brought up his 1000th goal of the season.

"It's a day I will always remember", Gibbs said yesterday.

Tony Symonds, the current Glenelg coach, held the Great Southern FL's one match goalkicking record last year with 18 for Victor Harbor.

Then last month Encounter Bay goalsneak Andrew Zealand broke that with 19 goals.

And now Gibbs has eclipsed them all. "I always said to Tony (Symonds) that I wanted to knock his record off, but you are not supposed to get 30 goals in a day", said Gibbs.

"It became embarrassing and at 3/4 time I'd had enough. But the coach (Kym Smith) said everyone wanted me to get 100."

Gibbs, known as "Mr. Cool" during his SANFL career, said he was shaking when he lined up for his 30th goal after the final siren.

The club may have survived that threat, but in the last couple of years have merged with Goolwa, a town about 15 minutes down the road.
Before the merger occurred they became known as the worst team in Australia and had a very unenvious losing record.
Eventually broke through for a win in spine chilling circumstances.
Tom Sullivan, actually a mate of mine, playing inhis first game for some time, drifted down from the half back line and booted a goal out of a pack within the last minute to put the Bloods in front.
Tom became a club legend, the team's success received state and national attention. I saw footage of Tom with the team, all his mates were celebrating loudly, while Tom was sitting back out of the way unobtrusively.
Prior to merging the club celebrated one more association best and fairest winner with David Whitbourne, now playing for Barmera, the recipient.

From memory it went something like this...

In one of the rare seasons that Victor were not going to make the finals, Ross needed 5 or 6 goals in the last minor round of the season to reach the ton. He had announced his retirement at the end of the year, so this was to be his last match. Late in the game he has taken a mark 35 out on a slight angle needing one more for the milestone. At the top of his run-up he's undressed himself thinking this would be a nice way to end a magnificent career. The field umpire has warned Ross to immmediately put his clothes back on or receive a red card. Gibbs refused and was duely sent from the ground, thus ending the year on 99 and being sent off in his final game!!

Sorry NM, I don't have that one, but your story was familiar to me. I reckon I heard it on the radio. However I thought he tried to kick the goal just dacks-off, not fully starkers.

Incidentally I did dig up a letter to the editor which claimed that mid-seventies Glenelg player Bob Paech managed 30.6 for Maroochydore v Gympie in Queensland in 1980.

Another writer claimed to have played for Kapunda in the Barossa and Light Association in the late 30s(!) and recalled their full forward dobbing 36 goals in one match - perhaps this is the record?


On another topic, I spoke to the CEO about Snout's Bar today. It's not coming back this year although there are plans to build full ameneties at the southern end - plans are "currently before the board and awaiting funding".

I reckon this year we knock up a black-on-gold sign reading "Bring Back Snout's Bar" and plant it at the Southern end every home match. Print up some T-shirts for all the old regulars.

I won't be able to rustle the scores up probably for months, if at all, but Quairading handed York some massive floggings in the mid '70s in the Avon Football Association in Western Australia. I recall one game where the reserves side kicked 60 goals, and the league side scored around 50, or vice versa. Just a kid at the time, so I'll stand corrected, but maybe someone else can fill in the blanks.
