Tonight Hingis beat 21 year old Australian Samantha Stostur in two sets. The first only lasted 23 minutes as Hingis capitalized 6 games to 1. The second set however was a different story as Stostur got off to a flying start Aceing Hingis first ball and won the first game 40-0. Then from there on in fatigue kicked in for Martina as there was no more than one game lead to each at any stage. Then Hingis went in to the final game 6-5 up, and was 40-Love untill Stosur ran Hingis raggered and went 6 a piece. Samantha had Hingins 5 to 2 in the seventh game, but Martina's brilliance took over and snuck in the seventh game 10-8.

Whilst Samantha was blown out of the water in the first set, she made more mistakes in the second. Hingis was playing her best tennis and beat Stosur quite comprehensiveley in the first set. In the second Hingis proved to be physically tired as it showed with some of her forced errors. However there were numerus times when I thought Stosur could take out a game much quicker than she did. Taking into account she has never gone through to the fourth round of a tournement before no doubt she was a little intimidated against the former number one. Samantha made a few mistaked herself and opted with shots that were more difficult for herself. She rarely took risks when they were a much easier option as Hingins's fitness was a personal weakness.

Never the less she was the only Australian to make it through to the fourth round, and that is a marvelous effort in itself. This match WILL be one of the biggest learning cuves of her career.

As even Hingis admitted in her post-match interview, there was some resemblance between her match with Stosur and with the final she screwed up a few years ago. The result went Hingis' way, but I think Stosur opened some old wounds. 3 years ago she struggled to play long matches against power players. And IMO, you can't say that's changed.

As for Stosur, she'll be back bigger and better in the future. She's only 21. She played really well actually. Would've learnt a lot. :thumbsu:

Our women's players could soon outrank our men's if Molik can get back fit and firing too.

Reckon Stosur will be top 20 soon.

yeah, but she has to learn how to control the weapon, her forehand.
Stos, heres a tip from left field, wait until it is in the slot before slamming the winner, in other words be patient it with it. ;)

I like her aggression. It's good to watch.

That forehands gonna do some serious damage at Wimbledon.

id probably say that this time is a bit different though because against Capriati it was bloody hot and humid but this time she hadnt played much at all over the last 3 years so its understandable that she was screwed

I must say I only started watching Stos after her previous game and also because she was the only Aussie left! I can't believe she's only 21! That's great for Australia as she's got plenty of spirit.

Re: Hingis V Stostur

IMO Hingis will bow out to Clijsters. Fitness i will take its toll, but I think her getting this far is a sign that the former number one womans champion is back
