He will play on next year cause he tore his calf muscle he will want to play out in style not in the stands

Essendon veteran James Hird is hopeful he will miss only two to three AFL matches with a calf muscle tear.

Hird suffered the injury in Friday night's costly loss to Geelong and scans confirmed the damage.

The former Bombers captain will retire at the end of the season.

"It's just a torn calf, it's not minor or major, it's just a standard calf - probably old age, getting on a bit," he said.

"It's what we thought it would be."

Hopefully this is accurate, I think it would be devastating to see him in the stands for too long.

im pretty sure 2 he will finsih up this year 2. please lets all hope we make the finals as the last round is in perth and it would be sad to see him play his last game over there. cmon dons push for finals and even if we only last the first round lets hope its in melbourne and we can all be there to say farewell. he deserves it:thumbsu::thumbsu:

No amount of suggesting otherwise on this forum will change Hird's retirement. Should he tear another muscle he may well be finished. It wouldn't detract from his greatness.

sad to think we now only have around 6 games of watching the great james hird play

Sadly, Hird made a commitment to his business, Gemba, at the end of last year that 2007 would be his last season.

Then again, you can't blame him considering he'll make a few million dollars out of it. A big man in Australia's sports marketing scene is James Hird.
