A couple of weeks ago I parked outside Safeway and then noticed a note had been left on my car. It said that a white ford wagon hit my car and drove off. They wrote down the registration but left no phone number.

I went to the police station with this information and was told I was on my own because the witness left no contact details.

Yesterday I got a quote from a panel beater and its gonna cost $800 to fix. This is a brand new car, I'm not happy!! Especially since I have the rego of the car, but the police won't do anything.

Anyone else had this happen?

Yeah i don't know why they could not look up the owners details..i mean what he did was illegal right?

yes it was, and usually they will help and look up the details... happened to my dad once and he chased them up, and they were forced to pay for the damage

Well the best I got after a lot of pushing was she said she'd give them a call and ask if they did it. If they say No, she said there's nothing they could do. I said well at least do that, at least it would shake them up if anything.

She went out the back, came back and said "I cannot find a phone number listed for the address, I tried VIC Roads and Telstra. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do, and I'm not going to send a patrol car out there since you don't have a witness."

Aren't they supposed to investigate when a crime has been commited. Thats what they are there for.

I guess you don't want to lie to the police but you could always say you were walking back to your car and saw it happen yourself. That way you're the witness. But you would have to lie to police.

I thought about doing that ..but I am a pretty honest person

The problem is I don't know what side of their car hit mine. It could all come undone fairly quickly if I gave the wrong answers to the questions.

clutchin at straws here but does safeway have cameras in the car park? if so perhaps plead with management to permit police access to it to verify.

If you have insurance make a claim & your company will chase the culprit. They will be prepared to work a bit harder to recover the costs

I haven't spoken to the insurance company. I'm guessing they'll do as much as the police and make me pay the excess. I'm pretty sure they need the drivers details from me.

Either way its gonna be a pain for me to fix it, as I'd be without my car for a few days and I have no option but to drive to work.

If your repairs are $800 the excess is surely a cheaper option and if they do find the person you have a chance of getting it back. The reluctance of some people to claim from insurance - which is exactly why you have a policy and pay a premium - frequently surprises me

my excess if $500, so I'd only be saving $300. Won't my premium go up if I make a claim? in the end costing me more? I'm rating 1 for life but I'm not sure if my premium would still rise.

This happened to me a couple of months ago. A truck sideswiped my parked car and snapped the drivers mirror off. A note was left on my car with the rego details and a contact number for the witness. I rang him and he said anything he needed from me he'd do as it was obvious the guy who hit me knew he'd done it and looked around before driving off.

I took all these details to the police station that day and................... nuthin!

They took down the rego and witness details and said they'd call me. I made probably 3 or 4 phone calls to them over maybe the next fortnight and nothing eventuated. In the end I gave up and just got it repaired. Luckily my dad own panel shops so I just had to pay for the part and not the labour or paint job.

It is illegal to hit something with your car and drive away. It is a crime. In my last phone call to the police in my frustration I said "Would you have tried a little harder had the guy hit me instead of my car?"

I know with my insurance if you can give them the guilty party you don't pay any excess. Get in touch quick before the guilty bugga fixes his car or rubs off any tell tale paint.

Same with my insurance, however I need their name and number. As the police didn't look further into it, the insurance company can't help me.

Maybe they have the same attitude to more serious crimes. "So you've got footage of a stabbing? Any contact details?"

1) There is no evidence that the number was the offending car as you dont know who left the note.

2) Police wouldnt access and release private details on a whim to the public. Why risk there job.

3) Insurance company couldnt do much without any details or a police report.
