Everyone knows we were out-muscled on Saturday night by Geelong's bigger bodies. We really did look like boys playing men. How we step this up dramatically over the pre-season and start piling on the kilo's should be the major focus. I'm sure the club would say it already is a focus, but looking at the likes of Brad Dick who has been there 3 years(I think, with a year off for a knee injury) the club should look at ditching going to Arizona and invest in the best weights coach they can find.

Genetics and age are a lot more relevant , the sports scientists have a much better idea on how a body is to be developed to stand up to the rigours of AFL fotball.

I do think we will be bigger next year (although Dick will not be noticeably bigger).

Players like McCarthy, Beams, Anthony, Goldsack, Reid and the like will all most likey show some size improvements.

IMO, every player on our list under 24 years old not named Cloke (196cm, 103kg), Dawes (193cm, 100kg), Macaffer (187cm, 86kg and built like a rock) or Stanley (182cm, 88kg) could do with a solid 5kg of hard muscle.

We should find out what programs/techniques Hawthorn use, as most of their 'home grown' players (as in, those that they drafted) have strong bodies, regardless of whether they're tall or small players. The talls are powerhouses and the smalls are total nuggets. Those that I refer to include:

  • Chance Bateman - 175cm, 77kg
  • Campbell Brown - 177cm, 83kg
  • Robert Campbell - 199cm, 108kg
  • Trent Croad - 190cm, 92kg
  • Lance Franklin - 196cm, 101kg
  • Brent Guerra - 182cm, 91kg (not a 'homegrown' player, but fits the muscular mould)
  • Luke Hodge - 184cm, 92kg
  • Josh P. Kennedy - 189cm, 93kg
  • Rick Ladson - 179cm, 84kg
  • Jordan Lewis - 186cm, 90kg
  • Ben McGlynn - 174cm, 75kg
  • Sam Mitchell - 179cm, 84kg
  • Michael Osborne - 178cm, 81kg
  • Cyril Rioli - 177cm, 80kg
  • Jarryd Roughead - 193cm, 102kg
  • Brad Sewell - 181cm, 86kg
  • Cameron Stokes - 174cm, 74kg
  • Simon Taylor - 200cm, 105kg
  • Travis Tuck - 188cm, 88kg
  • Brendan Whitecross - 183cm, 85kg
  • Mark Williams - 180cm, 88kg

They've got a fair number of players under 183cm (6'0" in the old measure), yet they rarely (if ever) get outmuscled around the ball. Their small players are built like boulders, and their talls can match anyone for strength. A fair few of those players have a bit more experience than our youngsters, but we should be aiming to build our players up in a similar way to what the Hawks have done I think.

Why does everyone insist that Dick gets bigger?? People aren't happy with their slim Dick? He'll never be inside...
