Pretty fair comparison, Hodge's captaincy and onfield leadership was more influential. I'd back Bartel as the better footballer though (more versatile, better skills in the wet).

Bias says Bartel for me. Hodge is a champion and seems to have become better with age, while Bartels best was the 07-11 period. I would feel much more comfortable with Hodge in defende than Bartel these days.

Hodge has been the better player than Bartel.

Bartel is rated super highly based on winning a Brownlow in 2007 and some big finals performances. He won the Brownlow as the 7th favourite or so, and had an amazing year and made AA but was probably the 5th or 6th best midfielder that year.

Hodge has an extra AA, Has 2 BnF to Zero, and has matched Bartels finals exploits plus has produced quite easily better form into his twilight years.

Bartel has more Neutral fan love but I personally think he is a touch overrated. Apart from some big finals performances i think he has only put together 2 seasons of TOP LINE form, Hodge would have at least 4.

Bartel is an absolute gun though, I just think Hodge pips him

i'd probably take bartel if we're taking both players at their absolute best. but greatness = excellence x duration and hodge has been elite for longer.

Hodge is probably in our top 10 of all time, and I can't imagine anyone connected with the club who'd redo the 2001 draft - his finals record, particularly GFs, speaks for itself. Without him, our premiership tally would be lower.

Bartel has been one of my favourite opposition players since about 2006. Immensely talented, versatile; he was a massive part of Geelong's recent premiership success, and his ability to rest as a marking forward complemented his abilities as a midfielder. It won them plenty of games.

My choice will always be Hodge, as cats fans' will always be Bartel. As supporter groups, we've been spoilt of late.
