Hi.

I need some help pls

Trying to network an xp laptop and xp desktop at home. Both hardwired thru a dlink modem/router/4port switch.

Used the network wizard and created a workgroup called mshome on both machines. Firewalls are sorted (ie off) and file and print sharing enabled. Problem is cant get a connection established. Internet access fine on both but theyre not talking to each other.

On the desktop in my network places it sees itself and the laptop. On the laptop in my network places it only sees itself but not the desktop.

I have tried pinging the desktop from the laptop. Works OK. But if I ping the laptop from the desktop it times out.

I am obtaining IP address and DNS server automatically which seems fine as they are being assigned different unique ips. Subnet mask and gateway are the same on both puters per ipconfig /all.

Originally had no log in password on the laptop and read on the net this may be an issue. Created one but still no dice. Have also tried enabling NetBios over tcp/ip on both machines. Nup. Adapters are all installed and fine. At a loss now

Any advice appreciated. Its driving me nuts.

It really does sound like some sort of a firewall issue.

I know that if Norton is installed (seen it with Mcafee as well) and they are past used by date or switched off they can cause all sorts of networking issues.

Is your ICMP protocol enabled in your firewall/router?

ping uses ICMP protocol rather than TCP/IP so if you've disabled that somewhere then ping may not work - might want to check all the different protocols are enabled and see if it fixes it and if it does then turn them off one-by-one until you spot the problem.

Either way, sounds like firewall or some kind of packet filtering causing it

You sound like you know what you're doing... probably just some minor oversight you made - maybe go back over what you've done carefully and check for a small typo :)

Thanks, but what is it?

Log into your router...see if the laptop is coming up on the DHCP client list.

Your Router Channel might need changing...set to default 6 if it already isnt and make sure any firewalls are allowing the IP through

Oh OK cheers for that. My modems address is set to a different addy. But yer, I already checked this and both puters ip and mac address are there. Which I figured to be the case since theyre both getting access to the net fine.

What is weird though is I just tried pinging from the modem to each machine. Pings fine from modem to desktop. Cant ping from modem to laptop. Even though laptop is accessing the net fine and has done for ages. Does this make ANY sense whatsoever??????

At least, I guess, this is consistent with the ping failure I got from desktop to laptop.

Oh yer tried it with firewalls and antivirus all disabled. No go.

F*** Im confused. Right now I dont care if I can network or not. Just want to know wtf ive missed.

Tried that. But no luck. Have disabled all firewalls anyway. Thanks anyway

Clearly not! :o

This is not unusual - there is simply some process in effect that is blocking traffic to the laptop. It's not blocking traffic from the laptop.

Try this. Open My Computer on the desktop. Type in \\ip.address (ie \\192.168.0.20) of the laptop and see what happens.

what brand & model number is your modem/router? tried googling for people with that brand modem having similar problems?
