Jeezus SA why so cynical?

Yes, how you do in high school directly correlates to not only how well you'll do in life (which there's no barometer for anyway), but will epitomise who you are as a person and you're worth. Psh. Right...

You will be okay. The uni system is all myth and bullshit and driven by finances. High school teachers will tell you how hard you need to work, their self-anointed great work habits, and how you'll end up a loser because you hated Economics: but remember that they're pissing away their lives exercising their ego on kids. And that the school system is heavily tilted in a shit direction.

Do your work and try hard with the subjects you like. The ATAR system will be harsh to you if you hate maths and sciences. But if you're passionate about one subject and pretty good at a second other, you should be able to accentuate your skills in those. Go hard in those ones. Tread water with the subjects you find a chore and just try and get over the line. You'll be alright.

How did that work out for you?

I guess anything's cynicism in comparison for a Carlton supporter. "Top four, top four! This is the year!"

Are you having an online nervous breakdown?

Bit of an irrelevant thing to bring up, but ooookay. Gonna be posting more photos of yourself soon?

Bringing up a house in Donvale and 4 Wheel Drives was a bit irrelevant wasn't it?
I don't think so, man. Having confidence in myself just sucks, I don't think I will do that again.

I have no issue with you, but you need to show some respect for people who have been through and the like before you. (Obviously not including myself, as I am still at Uni.) To generalise teachers as pissing their lives away is ignorant.

Just blitzed a mid-semester exam after being overseas/interstate for three weeks and simply looking at lecture slides for an hour beforehand. I should write a book.

The best tests are the ones where they allow a page of notes. That's code for 'don't have to study'

I find it hilarious how you say teachers are just pissing away their lives.

I know a few who do it simply because they enjoy it and they have to do something to keep occupied. Meanwhile, a certain one is looking at the large amounts of money coming in from some investment properties from years ago.

Teachers piss everyone off, but there are always some who give you their time and are doing it for the right reasons. It seems that wherever you went didn't have those teachers.

I had some fantastic teachers in my time at school. Some who used more 'abstract' methods so to speak. Not just read a book, answer some questions.
Sure, I had some teachers like that as well, but luckily, most of them came in subjects that I enjoyed. Therefore, I didn't mind doing a bit of reading, and then answering some questions.

There are a lot of teachers who would hate what they do and thus you could say are "pissing their lives away" but there are also a lot that genuinely care about kids and want to make a difference

There's people in all kinds of fields pissing their life away, not sure why teachers are getting picked on...

Back to the actual topic, nbaman1 as had been suggested, I think you should find a reward for yourself for studying. E.g. I play a game of FIFA after I have done x amount of studying.
Either that, or push hard to get it started. Getting it started is the hardest bit. Once you're started, the rest comes easier. For me, anyway.

Think I'm beginning to develop a similar problem, but probably for different reasons to the OP. Feel as though study and homework is eating far too much into my personal time and as such I'm starting to lose the motivation to do it. Have lost a lot of the energy required to do it, and studying isn't really that beneficial if you aren't enthusiastic about doing the work in subjects you enjoy. How do I get it back?

Not only that, but I keep hearing heaps of negative stuff about VCE from people who have completed school (particularly from uni students)- mostly things such as "VCE is a waste of time" or on the other hand "if you don't do well in VCE then you're screwed". Really puts me off studying at times and makes me question the importance placed on doing well in HS.

Everyone builds up school to me this massive thing, teachers, friends and most importantly your parents. But at the end of the day it's nothing, I can think of countless examples of people have done poorly at school yet excelled at uni. Some people naturally suit the schooling environment - yet when they get to uni they have no work ethic and motivation and ultimately end up doing poorly. Academically the most successful person I know is one who apparently failed high school english, didn't do TEE and was regarded by most teachers as a sped, today his well on his way to being an english teacher and is excelling in his double degree.

The worst thing about the education system is that it disenfranchises those who do poorly at school, they are categorised as dumb and are generally looked down upon by the supposed 'smart' kids and as a result a large portion develop this mentality that they will amount to nothing. Afew years after HS you look at these 'dumb' kids and you realise they were actually quite smart and the education system was holding them back or they get into drugs and live a troubled youth, conversely you realise these 'smart' kids who were put up on a pedestal at high school really haven't lived up to all the hype.

I've lost all motivation to do any study and homework.

Just can't be bothered.

Any advice?

Why do you think that is? Is it because you feel as though you don't have enough personal time, don't enjoy the work you're given, unsure of what you want to do, or another reason/a combination of reasons?

Either way I think solving the problem is like solving any other problem where a lack of motivation is the issue- set goals in terms of study/academic achievement and think of the reward you'll get from doing this stuff. Organising your study, breaking it down into chunks, and tackling homework bit by bit will probably help, as will getting yourself into good habits, staying focused, being organised, and avoiding distractions (this is a big one).

Like anything else though, different methods work for different people. All that might not necessarily be your go. Self-discipline is the most important thing needed for studying and that can be a big problem for some people (myself included during high school). Set yourself some goals and you'll be surprised at how the satisfaction you'll get from achieving them will motivate and drive you.

Depends on what you're studying as well. Do you enjoy doing the VCE units you do?

I'd rather go and play basketball or have fun.

I'm also quite unsure of what I want to do. My dream involves sports but in reality I'll be looking at going to uni and getting a job like most others.
