House goes up in flames as Geelong siege continues

Residents were earlier evacuated from the street.

A blaze has started at a house at the centre of a siege at Geelong in Victoria with a man, and possibly a hostage, still inside.

Police spent about seven hours this afternoon working to negotiate with a man inside a house in Rose Avenue at Norlane.

They had been called in around midday after reports a man armed with a gun had locked himself inside the house.

The man claimed to have a nine millimetre hand gun and to have a woman hostage inside the property.

However police said they could not confirm the presence of a woman, saying they had not seen her or spoken to her.

Just before 7.00pm AEST the Special Operations Group fired gas shells into the house to try to get the man to surrender.

About 20 minutes later, the house went up in flames.

The Country Fire Authority is now working to put out the blaze.

POLICE have found the body of a woman after a seven-hour siege in which a man barricaded himself in his house in Geelong's north.

The 42-year-old man called a relative late this morning to say he was in the Rose Ave house armed with a firearm and had killed his de facto, Victoria Police spokeswoman Marika Fengler said.

"Police were notified and attended the address around midday where they began negotiations with the man," Ms Fengler said.

"The negotiations continued throughout the day in which the 42-year-old threatened police as well as self-harm.

"The man allegedly sprayed accelerant around the house while CFA trucks were on stand-by and just after 7pm a fierce fire erupted inside the house."

Firefighters doused the fire from outside the house while Special Operation Group police surged into the house.

Police arrested the man and found the woman's body in a front room.

The woman was aged in her 40s.

The cause of death is unknown.

Homicide detectives are waiting for the pathologist and forensic experts to examine the crime scene.

The Norlane man was taken to hospital under police guard. He is being treated for injuries sustained in the fire.

The fire has since been extinguished by fire crews.
