Takes a special talent to knock off Bolton when it comes to time trials ... AT HIS FIRST ATTEMPT!!

He is a fine specimen with a buring desire to succeed, puts in 110% and has a very professional approach (exceeding his years).

"In early testing he has equalled the club record of 2.75 seconds for the 20-metre sprint and run 10 minutes 43 seconds in the 3.2km time trial."

Sounds good, I'm very excited to see Houli in action in the NAB cup.

This impressed me the most. Considering at the start of the year his pace was meant to be a weakness. He even had someone help him out to develop greater burst speed. Looks like it is paying dividends, that is freakin' quick.

He has been sent to us from the Footy Gods in payment for Lloyd's hammy and years of Hird's mishaps;) .

But we had to go thru the pain of 2006 to get him. Once again luck has been thrown our way getting a gun.The cards have fallen our way in this draft.

Hope he lives up to the hype...and something tells me he will......

I agree, but i don't personally like rating a player on their aerobic and physical aspects. They have to have a footy brain to become a gun player, and there is no test for that.

I really like what i have read so far about Houli. He sounds like a true champion of a person.

I think he might add some more sportsmanship to the game as well.

Well done Sheeds, you've got yourself a nice little recruit there :)

:thumbsu:

Still dont know if one of the reasons they are pumping him up is to detract attention to Gumby and our top 3/4 picks. Whilst he sounds great and is committed why did he go so late in draft. Everyone had him as top 20 some even in top 10. There has to be some reason... Hope he kicks a** this season.

Perhaps the reason he fell was due to his religion, and all the fasting, days off, etc that goes with it?

Good on sheeds for looking past that, if that is the case. I doubt it would be, but just a suggestion.

He'll be very good for you guys.

Injury concerns combined with it being a deep draft were part of the reason he fell.

I don't think his religion had anything to do with it and in reality he has out-performed all expectations in his testing thus far. If it was known this would happen, no doubt he would have gone earlier.

He looks like he has the body to go straight into AFL. But as with any new player, it is the speed of the game he will have to adapt to. Although with the game going as it has been lately, that may be easier than in the past;)

That most definately is his biggest challenge and it was something he struggled with in the Intra-club match before Christmas.

He didn't get near it for three and a half quarters. It will be interesting to see how he goes in the first serious practice match of the season.

I reckon there's a definate case of his religion causing him to slip.

It would have been put in the too hard basket for some clubs and they opted the safe approach and passed on him.

Anyone who thinks religion didn't play a part is kidding themselves.

Look at it this way, we had four picks before Houli. Gumbleton, Jetta, Hislop and Davey.

Davey was drafted at 36, Houli 42, would have drafted Houli before any of those?

I reckon Houli was drafted so at 42 because that's about where he fits into the draft. He has some queries over his position at AFL level, he's not quite a half forward, he's not quite a pure midfielder. He had some injury concerns and there were some extremely gifted footballers drafted before him.

Between Davey and Houli there were two father-son selections, so in reality there were only three live picks between and I most definately wouldn't have drafted Houli ahead of Davey.

Yeah, maybe we got a bargain, but that remains to be seen. I just think it was a strong draft and that's about where he fits into it.

The too hard basket? Religion wouldn't have been a factor...thats just media hype and BF bullcrap.Doesn't matter what you look like or where you're from in footy,it's how you handle the footy that matters. He must have been judged on his skills alone and how good he kicks and marks the football.

Anyone who suggests that recruiters thought" Hmmm Houli..good skills, good pace, good attitude..oh hang on,he's a muslim...we pass" is kidding them selves I'm afraid.

I agree with Nobby there. It might help to go back to the start of the other thread and read the newspaper articles quoted/linked and take note of what Houli himself said.

He's already played juniors and being Muslim did not make any difference. He sought advice from clerics about breaking the Ramadan fast in preparation of the draft camp.

He will more than likely receive dispensation to not fast during Ramadan if it is during the season.

The argument put forward that Houli's religion was 'too hard' for other clubs is almost as ridiculous as suggesting that Indigenous/Aboriginal players would go on walkabout in the middle of a game.

Not as simple as that folks.

Look at it this way. Recruiters are trying to decide between Bachar, John Smith a good country boy, and Joe Brown a boy from WA.

When they weigh up there options :

Bachar -
Pros - Good Skills,etc
Cons - Religion could affect training? Can he handle the pressure due to racist clowns out there? How will he handle the club culture?

Smith and Brown
Pros - Good Skills, etc
Cons - ??

Might be not as obvious as out and out racism but it sure played a part. I guess most of you posting about this subject are anglo-saxon and don't understand what it's like to be from another country.....

Or perhaps those that have seen him play and recognise there were a lot of good footballers in the draft and Bachar isn't quite as good as a lot like to make out.

Fact is, you have to have a near on professional approach to even get drafted. The TAC Cup system requires a high level of commitment and Bachar Houli, more so than most others, passed that with flying colours. His religion has actually proved to be a positive on his football rather than a negative and his pre-season training results have shown that.

At the end of the day, there is no way Bachar is a better footballer than Alwyn Davey and I find it hard to believe that he slipped because he is a Muslim. I don't think he slipped at all.

A lot has changed since Nicky Winmar was harassed. Sheeds and Demetriou aren't going to tolerate such behaviour anymore.

All players now receive cultural sensitivity training.

Why are you being so negative?
