I just watched the round 9 game against Richmond again. I reckon Houli's getting a raw deal. Penetrating and accurate kick. Usually good with his hands. Is tougher in contested situations than last season.

I don't want to see Houli end up as trade bait.

Has he ever played forward?
What the hell does he have to do?

Been saying this for ages. Was good when he played a few AFL games in a row, was sick at the wrong time and hasn't played a game since despite dominating VFL..

I really like the guy not sure why he's not given a fair crack week in week out. Surely he can provide a far more useful service that NLM of half back. Then again only my opinion

Oh course you'd say that Houli, all you ever do is think of yourself.

:D:thumbsu:

I've got a sneaking suspicion he was always in the plans of the selectors this week, and either Watson or Lovett will pull out tomorrow.

The main criticism of Houli is that he doesn't run both ways. I would prefer him in the team than a few players though.

That's why he was played in the backline. Are you saying he wasn't accountable in the games he played? Very stiff not to be playing, very stiff indeed.

No, I'm not saying he wasn't accountable. It was the main criticism against him though. I honestly believe he is one of our best finishing midfielders by foot. He deserves a match.

It's a bit of a mystery to me as to why he isn't being selected.

His kicking of half back has been a weapon and he has shown that he has some ability in shutting down a defender.

He panics a bit but with more game time that will improve. I scratch my head as to why guys like Myers, Quinn... and even Hocking have been selected to play off half back when he has shown much more.

I said earlier this season that we need to stick with him and give him a good solid run in the seniors.

he hasnt been picked because his defensive side wasnt up to strach and his decsion making is questionable... he has not been dominating at bendigo, he should be but the facts are he isnt...For what its worth he was in decent form and got injuried at the wrong time...prob should have been given a chance, but needs to start killing at bendigo to be considered a walk up start

This is originally. When he came back into the side his defensive attributes were the highlight of his game. Is he back to sqaure one because he got injured?

FWIW i would pick Houli as an outside midfielder before Stanton. Stanton also doesn't work the other way but atleast Houli has polished kicking skills. He will be far more damaging long term.

Stanton is probably the hardest runner in our team

Those who do not understand why he is not in the team are showing up how much they do not know about it.
Houli is a young bloke who is learning but he has to learn he can not play like he did all the way through juniors and simply run around where he wants to.
He has done ok at VFL level but he has also still fallen down at times as far as the defensive side goes and where he runs.
As mentioned earlier he is still suspect as far as decision making under pressure goes as well.

Footy at AFL level is not simply about picking the best 22 on your list. He has been over hyped a lot simply becasue he can find the ball but there was a reason he went in the 40's at draft time rather than ealry second round where a lot predicted he would.
He has time on his side and i dont see how being in and out of the side during your third season makes him some sort of trade bait.

I appreciate all that but it just doesn't feel right when McVeigh hasn't been made to earn his stripes even though he has proven this season that he hasn't been up to it physically/mentally - I can understand him being rushed in once or twice but he's been rushed back into the side on too many occasions when Houli could've/should've (depending on one's opinion) been selected ahead of McVeigh.

I'm not going to say Houli is the messiah or pump up his tires but he's currently got something that McVeigh doesn't - a fitness base, good attitude and some form (albeit VFL form)

Still craps himself under pressure, even at VFL pace.
When he fixes that, I'm sure he'll be a regular.

dun dun duuuuuh (dramatic organ music) - a 3rd year player picked in the 3rd round isn't perfect.

Shocking news.

Massive panic stations.

Save sheddy

Sack the board.

Sack quinn*

* at some point in this post I became a bit sarcastic.

Fair point ant!!! My argument to that is 3 quarters of our list are young and developing players who are learning, however the difference is most are getting an opportunity to string consecutive games together at senior level. Unfortunately I don't think houli is getting the same opportunity you could also argue Myers' case as well. Given we're trying to build a young side to possibly play finals in the next few years I think persisting with him at senior level (maybe as a tagger) will give him much needed experience and more importantly build his confidence going forward. He needs to adapt to the pace of the game at senior level.

If Myers did not injure his knee a couple of weeks ago and then agrivate it again last week he probably would have been playing this week.

Why and in what position?

Why? Because he is a young and developing player who needs to gain experience at senior level to adapt to the pace of the game. Has shown he has ability to run and carry and also has enough height to play a stopping role across half back.

In what position? Ideally I'd like to see him play across half back, with he and Dempsey on either flank. In 2008 he played some footy in the midfield and averaged 15 possessions. I know it doesn't sound like great numbers, but for a young player in his second year it was a pretty good effort IMO.
