Just curious... I read recently, in WA, Fremantle and West Coast split up the local league teams for the Father / Son rule. What do the Crows and Port do with the SANFL?

Same as WA.

Sons of players who played for 200 games for South Adelaide, Sturt, Glenelg or Norwood are F/S eligible for the Crows.

Similarly Power with Port Magpies, Central Districts, North Adelaide, West Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens (and the predecessor clubs of the latter?).

Apparently the qualification criteria is 200 games in isolation for the one club and not a combination thereof. e.g. The son of player who played 200 games for Sturt is eligible for selection by the Crows. The son of a player who played 100 games for Glenelg and 100 games for Norwood is not.

I think that about covers it. These rules will change once we've been in the competition for 20 years. i.e. 2011. After which point only sons of former Crows players (100+ games) will be eligible.

Crows get sons of 50-game players with all SANFL clubs except Port, where Port get sons of players who have played 200 games or more.

Maybe you missed the complete stupidity of it and hence thought I was being serious?

Or maybe I thought you really are an idiot?
There are the same amount of players aligned to each club, even if they do have an extra team.

Hypothetical... what if the Father plays 200 games for Port Adelaide Magpies, then plays 100 games for the Crows... who can the Son play for?

just maybe said:
Why do Port get 5 clubs and we only get 4?

6 if you consider that woodville and West-Torrens were separate clubs for all except 4 years of the Port criteria.

I think they added up all the players who have played 200 games in SANFL and they worked out.

Just wondering couldn't Lleyton Hewitt go to Port under the father son rule since daddy played 300+ games for Woodville?

From the AFL 2005 book page 334;

Until October 31, 2010, Adelaide may include a player on its primary list if that player's father played 200 or more senior grade matches at one of the following clubs from 1970 to 1990: Norwood, Glenelg, Strurt, South Adelaide.

Until October 31, 2017, Port Adelaide may include a player on its primary list if that player's father played 200 or more senior grade matches at one of the following clubs from 1977 to 1997: Port Magpies, Woodville, West Torrens, North Adelaide, Central Districts or West Adelaide.

Some interesting points on the above;

1. Adelaide get 20 seasons (1991-2010) to recruite from SANFL fathers and Port get 21 seasons (1997-2017). Unless there is an error in the above 2 paragraphs. The rules under WCE and Freo section are for 21 seasons.

2. What happens for example if a father players 120 games for Norwood before the Crows entered AFL and 80 or more games for them after 1990, will the Crows be denied the opportunity to draft the son?? I think so.

3. If a player starts his SANFL career after 1990 and plays 200 or more SANFL games, has never made an AFL list, the games are considered irrelevant for the father son rule. Makes some sense but it's a bit harsh.

4. I have an official SANFL book published in 1977 after the centenary season. It shows Russell Ebert had played 222 by season end and 24 games in 1977, making a total of 198 games at the end of 1976. Russell played 392 games for Port so if the cut of rule was after the 1977 season not before it, Brett would not have qualifed under the father son rule. How bizare would that have been. :eek:

5. The SANFL for many years, not sure about these days, counted preseason competion/ night games, like the Escort cup and Foundation cup as official games for player total games. An example from the book I mentioned in pt 4. shows Rex Voight and D Holst played 27 games in 1977. Glenelg played 22 + 4 finals games.
