The AFL looks down on betting in games where the player is able to influence the result. Nicholls can't even get a game, let alone a touch to influence the game.

Whether that is consistent with Nathan Bock getting a similar punishment for leaking information to friends that won them a lot of money... who knows. He was fined $10,000 and his family made $40,000 off it.

I guess it’s because he didn’t bet on outcomes involving himself. It takes some of the potential for match-fixing out of the equation.

Every chance you're right, but if so it's a pretty narrow regime. Eg... in theory he could still have had inside information, or he could have been co-operating with someone who was playing.

It's consistent with expansion clubs getting every single little advantage the AFL can give them.

Did he bet on Suns Games?

Yes but he wasn’t playing in them. Again, it takes the potential for match fixing out, but not the “insider knowledge”.

Well still should not bet on a Game that your Team Plays For

And that would have been covered off in the investigation by looking at the types of bets placed.

Of course. In fact they’re not allowed to bet on AFL at all.
wonder where they could have gotten that from.. Not like AFL promote gambling or anything... lol

Also it mentions bets "on his account" article kinda implies someone made the bets on his account.

This bloke... 10 bets, banned for two matches. Stevenson was 3 bets (IIRC), banned for 10 matches.
The no betting on afl is all about stopping any form of match fixing. Stephenson's was much more serious because he was betting on games he played in and could potentially help fix an outcome.

Using inside info would impact the integrity of the betting market, but not necessarily the integrity of the game, so from an AFL perspective, not close to the potential that Stephos bets posed.

You don't call stacking drafts picks and heaps of other advantages for expansion clubs match fixing?

Competition rigging??

Of course I understand the rationale.

But it is none the less what it is.

As others have said he didn’t face as severe a punishment because he didn’t bet on games he was involved in. The flip side is that we’ve seen the punishment progressively grow in severity for this type of infraction and with the amount of training players receive this is a wet lettuce leaf. It’s the type of punishment a once off “mistake” warrants, but this was a blatant “I’m not a big name so I won’t be caught” incident.

No, I don't call it match fixing.
