I'm wanting to change careers in the future as i'm sick of what i am doing.

What job do you do and how much do you make, also what qualifications do you need to get into your line of work.

I would love to hear what others do and make so it can give me a idea of what i need to do to get into another career i would enjoy.

So i will start of course

Department manager in a supermarket

$60k + bonus's of up to $12k a year depending on a number of kpi's

Experience

Management experience in retail or some other industry otherwise you can work your way up to that level but might take a 2-3 year.

I think you'll find you are on a pretty good wicket Rob, unless you want to retrain as a tradie, work in the mines or go back to uni!

I earn 46K in admin...

I was about to type that not many people would feel comfortable telling you how much they earn on an internet forum.....

One thing i will say is what exactly are you after, what are you saying you actually want? Do you want more money or do you want to feel more fulfilled? Or both? I can answer the first one, if you want to earn big bucks then the only answer is to set up your own business, make it big and profitable and that's how you'll earn big money. Owning your own business is the difference between earning 50-60-100-150-even up to 250 grand a year, and earning 500,000-1-2-5 million a year. People dream about winning lotto, really they should be setting up a business and working their arses off cause if you nail it you've got your surefire winning lotto ticket every year.

If you're after fulfillment then you should probably grab a backpack and go overseas for a while. You'll probably have a better idea for what's going to make you fulfilled somewhere along the line if you do that. At worst it'll probably break society's grip on your perception (if this is how you think) that money, working 9-5, etc is how life generally works. What are you passionate about? Footy? Animals? Poetry? Music? Find your passion and make it your job and you'll never work another day in your life.*

I hear the average miner makes $130,000 a year. I wouldn't do it because I don't like to get dirty, but if you want the money then head over to Western Australia and give it a go. Even driving trucks in mines pays well I hear.

basically impossible
you either need a ton of experience or you have to know someone
i know a professional chef who applied to be a kitchenhand (80/85k) and they turned him down

Not easy to get a job in the mines

I was up in the Qld coalfields
I had house, car provided

Try to get a truck job to fly in and out 4 Days on 4 off
Virtually impossible
They dont advertise, except internally and even when you find out join the line.
Though had wifes and girlfriends of the guys working for me get truck jobs by cleaning rooms for BHP and being offered promotions to train as drivers.

Cant get accomadation if you drive into town Van park is booked 2 years ahead and rental is $500 plus aweek for rubbish and $600 plus for semi decent

I own some industrial land in Karratha WA. In addition to the shed I've got 4 caravans on it rented out at $300/week each, and haven't had 1 days vacancy for almost 12 months. Accomodation is a real issue in the major mining areas.

Bulldogrob, just pick something that you are good at - the money will follow with time.

The worst thing you can do is constantly switch industries always chasing the latest sectoral wage spike - you will always always be one step behind the trend.

Pick a career that genuinely interests you, stick at it, and eventually the times will suit you my friend.

Red Rooster part-time.

$140 a week.

The money ain't great, but when I see the look on those little kids' faces... I just know their flabby parents aren't fit to raise children...

I recently became a foreign exchange/futures trader. It's a commission based job, so the pay varies on how often our clients trade. It can be anywhere between 60k-200k pa. The minimum qualification you need is PS 146 and that is a doddle to obtain. It's a great job because there is always plenty of excitement and amusement. I've seen guys make 100k profit overnight and then lose it all the next week. One guy turned 90k into 1million in 6 months, and then lost it all in the next 3.

Very hard to maintain a decent salary. All you hear is the glory stories which are far and few between.

If you are only ever chasing $$$, then I hate to break it to you, but you are going to never truly be happy, and always look for something more.

Your working life will span, all things being equal, somehwere betwen 35-45 years. You need to find contentment to survive and thrive in life.

With that in mind, it needs to be about what you are passionate about, what is a challange for you, and what gives you a sense of acomplishment and pirde.

Once you find, or strive for that, the monetary reward will follow, but will not be the driving factor.

Therefore, what you earn is irrelevant. A lifestyle involves more than a cash payment.

I'd have to disagree with you. This is exactly why most people end up working all their life, because they expect to work 35-40 years and don't specificallly try to make money.

Having said this I do agree money is pretty irrelevent when it comes to being happy, and you don't need to have a lot to be happy. But life is much easier if work is a choice rather than a necessity, you will never get to a situation where work is a choice unless you are very lucky or do have a plan that will allow you to make enough money so that you ne longer need to work.

one thing I promise you.

if you choose a new career path based on what you think you will earn, you will be fed up with that soon enough. money isn't everything (trust me, I have enough to be able to say that)

find something you like, and the rest will take care of itself.

Up until 8 weeks ago i had been working offshore in the oil and gas industry as a foreman for 14+ years. Worked on some of the biggest projects-timor to Darwin gas pipeline, the 2nd Woodside trunk line in dampier-good money but after 14+ years i had enough.

I now work ashore based in melbourne as a manager for an oil and gas support company-same pay as i was getting offshore as well!!

Question.

Have a friend, who I see occasionally. Last time I saw him he tells me this tale where he meets some guys from Santos. They need some guy to help out in the office with logistics for a new rigs they're meant to be setting up.
Cut a long story short, while he's with them in this area, he's apparently making 4k a week.

Didn't get all the details, but I just took it at face value, but after i read what you said, thought I'd ask.

Bullshit or not?
