Pendlebury is out of contract at the end of 2016. He will take a large component of of salary cap if he does sign on. Hine said at a recent Club 42 he aims to target experience this trade period but we aren't a destination club.

Here's a maths problem to nut out. How many A grade players do you want and how much do you pay them?

If you want 8 that might cost you $5 million - 2 emerging stars say at 300k, 4 mid career stars at 800k, 2 twilight stars at 650k. Altogether that's almost half the spend space. You then need to spend the other $6 million (including ASA) on 32 players.

To manage the cap of $11 million (Salary Cap and ASA) you need to include @40 players on the list.

How would you apportion it?
Take the players on their first contracts out of the equation because they are fixed salaries. List the players 1 to whatever that leaves. Divide each players number by the total number on that list and multiply it by $11m less the first contract total. That gives a rough equally weighted allocation. It would require some massaging from there bit it's rough guide as start.

Based on a $100k starter salary over 10 players. It puts Pendlebury on a bit over $600k at the head of the remaining 32 players.
My assumed numbers might be a bit out and you'd have to compress the salaries a bit and add a bit to the top end players.

Try it in a spreadsheet. It's not that easy.

I think we'd be at the higher end of the ladder in terms of having some spare cash to snag a big name. Outside, Swan, Pendlebruy, Cloke and Reid, I don't think we have a lot of players on BIG money. Swan will retire this year, so that's another one gone.

If we are going to seriously over pay a free agent to get them to the club we should at least get a player who is young enough to be at his best when we next hope to have a tilt at a flag. 2018 +

This is why I would prefer Treloar over Dangerfield. Our team is built for the future may as well have a young gun who will reach his prime in the coming years over a player who is already in his prime.

I did before I posted but I can't link it.
Pendlebury = 32/528 x (11m-(10x100k) = $606k.
That's not enough for him so as I said you need to massage the numbers a bit. We've a lot in the middle rung on less than the formula would give them which we'd add to the top end and/or bank to recruit.

Danger is only 25

Shiel and Trelor on 600k each i would be happy with

We wouldn't have the currency to get them both, would struggle to get 1.

If that's true it's a massive error IMHO - not re-signing Pendlebury but resigning ourselves to bringing in B+ role players to fill the cap space and keep us competitive while the kids develop.

We've got 2 genuine A graders at the midpoint of their career (Pendlebury and Sidebottom), 2 aged A graders (Swan and Cloke) and 1 prospective A grader (Elliot). If you don't make a play at genuine A graders like Dangerfield and Treloar, you pad the cap out across the list.

We'd have the money but if by currency you mean attraction, if we can pull Treloar or similar then we are more likely to attract Dangerfield. We have to make some big moves this off-season - the bolder the better.

In any case, we need to make a big move for a quality player this off-season or the cap is going to go up in smoke on mediocre players.

With the introduction of the soft cap recently where clubs can spend 95% of the salary cap one year (currently $10 mil p.a.) then 105% the following, that alone should give a club $1 million to play with in the chase for an out of contract player or free agent.

It's always a speculative exercise to guess about salary caps, but I reckon we are probably in the 95% soft-cap space.

We have lost in the last two years Beams, Shaw, Thomas, Didak, Jolly, Lamumba, Johnson, Maxwell, Ball, Lynch, with Young, Armstrong, Thomas and Keeffe likely exits at the end of this year.

The ins of Adams, Greenwood, Varcoe, White, Karnezis and Crisp don't make up the cap deficit by a long-shot. A lot of kids have been re-signed but they won't be at any high level in my view, probably all under the AFL average.

If we are operating at 95% of Total Player Payments this year and therefore have the option to spend 105% then we have a million up our sleave for 2016.

I reckon we have the money to make a play at Dangerfield on a front-ended contract as well as at a Treloar type player. I think this is the time to squeeze a couple of wages together to free up money for two A grade talents.

Swan will be finishing up soon as well so plenty of money should be sloshing around.

The play at Dangerfield requires money but also the prospect of some not too distant future success, so making a double play at someone like Shiel or Treloar would help that operation.

Would have to give up our first round to do it but worth a play for me. We need a Cloke replacement so maybe that might be the priority over Treloar etc but the point remains we need to take advantage of our cap situation now rather than padding it out and overpaying our young players.
Considering we never recruit anyone I'll say not much. Our players are greedy and eat most of the cap up. Not worth what they are paid. Cloke especially.

I was meaning something that would make GWS trade. Treloar in particular would demand more than a first round pick given his quality and age. But what else would we have on our list that would even tempt GWS? Even if we were nominated by Treloar?

Can't even think of a player that would could trade with someone else in a three way to try get another draft pick, if in fact GWS want picks and not experienced players.

If we end low on the ladder as I suspect, our first pick plus a fringe player or 3rd round should be close.

HS seems to think Pies have $1.1m to throw at Dangerfield. Hawks have no room to move & Geelong fluff on about their culture and how they wont offer overs blag blah blah. this will test them!. Personally (and I have already posted this) we should throw whatever money we have at a few GWS or GCS guns... we know who they are.

Problem is that to get the GWS and GCS players you need to trade.. GWS would want at least a first pick and a player for the likes of Shiel and Trelour

Not sure there is much joy in trading with Gubby. GC seem reasonable.
Free agents the calibre of Dangerfield on the other hand, that cost nothing in a trade are gifts from God and the risk of over paying a salary for 4 years or whatever pales in comparison to the risk of over paying a kid from a start-up franchise after paying a high transfer price.

Dangerfield via F/A
Shiel or Treloar with our first and 2nd round picks

Get it done..

This is Pendles 10th year in the comp, which means he is eligible to be put on the veterans list next year.
IIRC , every veteran has $125000 of his pay per year not counted in his salary.
We have Pendles, Cloke, Swan and Toovey who were drafted in 2005 or before, which means we should have $500000
free if we haven't already allocated that to their existing contract.
eg: We pay Cloke $700000 per year of the salary cap, yet he receives $825000 after the veteran allowance is added.
