Tutorial How to add shadows to your template in Illustrator

Hey guys, this one has been requested by many people so I thought I'd chuck it up on the FJGD board for you all.

Before I start, a big shout out to Bacon Warrior for showing me how to do it!

Also, a key with mastering this is to take your time. It takes me about an hour per template to add shadows to now, but I used to have to sit down for 3 hours to work it all out. So be patient, and the reward comes in the attention to detail.

1. Ok so open up a suitable Illustrator template. By suitable, I mean, it should look similar to how it should look when worn. So no exaggerated curves (see my FIRA team if need be ). I'm using this template which I made in my previous tutorial.

2. Go into the collar and ensure each component is in it's own group. In this instance, mine goes "Logo", "Main", "Bib", "Back", "Inner". Add a new layer into each of these groups (except "Logo"), move it to the top, and name it "Shadow".

3. In the "Main" group, select the "Shadow" group. Now draw a shape, similar to this with the pen tool in the group.

4. Now duplicate the left side of the main collar (ctrl + C then ctrl + F). Now move this into the shadows layer and ensure it is above the black blob.

5. Create a clipping mask, in the "shadow" group, select the left part of the collar, hold shift, and select the black blob. Now create the clipping mask (ctrl + 7).

6. Go into the clipping group and only select the black blob.

7. Now go up to Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

8. With the preview box selected, move the arrow around until it looks normal-ish. About 8.9 looks good.

9. Now change the opacity to about 40%.

10. Now select the whole clipping group, right click > transform > reflect > vertical > copy. And move it into the position of the right part of the main section of the collar.

11. Now lock the "Shadow" group in the "Main" group.

12. Now repeat the same steps for the bib. Except this time, reflect and copy the blob, before it's in the clipping mask.

13. Duplicate the bib (ctrl+c then ctrl+f), move it into the "shadow" group above the two blobs, create a clipping mask (ctrl+7).

14. Go into the clipping group and select both of the blobs. Effect > Blur > Gaussian blur. About 6.1 looks good.

15. Set opacity to 40% and lock the "shadow" group.

16. Repeat the same process for the back collar. Remember, make the two blobs> duplicate back collar > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > lock shadows group.

17. Now we're going to do it for the inner. Create the following 4 shapes.

18. Follow the same process again. Duplicate inner > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > lock shadows group.

19. The collar is now done! Now, because we have shadows, there is no need for the grey outline! Get rid of the grey outline by selecting each shape that's blue, then pressing the white box with the red line to delete the stroke on each path.

The collar is now complete!

20. We are literally following the same steps for the cuffs. Do 1 cuff at a time. Remember duplicate cuff > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > reflect and copy > move into correct position > lock shadows group.

21. Remove the stroke on the blue cuffs.

The cuffs are now complete!

22. Now let's do the same to the jumper base. In terms of layer organisation, I'd place the shadow group below the cuffs, but above the stitching.

23. Make the two blobs> duplicate back collar > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > lock shadows group.

24. Now delete the stroke on the base of the jumper.

25. To make the front of the jumper look a bit more natural, select the stitching and turn the opacity down to about 50%. Much better.
292rxio.png

The front of the jumper is now done.

26. Copy the cuffs shadow and the back of the collar shadow across to the back of the jumper and place in appropriate places, lock these groups and delete the stroke.

27. Now make shadows for the base. Exactly the same process. Make the two blobs> duplicate base layer > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > lock shadows group.

ezpj7s.png

28. Delete the stroke and set stitching (except GPS) opacity to 50%.

29. To make the GPS look more realistic, we've also got to add a bit of depth to it. It's literally the same process. Make the two blobs> duplicate base layer > rearrange layers > create clipping mask > gaussian blur > opacity 40% > lock shadows group.

30. Now turn the GPS stitching down to 50%.

And it's done!

If you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Mate. This is brilliant. Great job. All Id recommend is to explain why youre doing something.

For example, You have instructed to draw a blob. Why? Why do I want to? A blob can come in any size and shape so what is my guide for what it should look like?

Just something to keep in mind

Very good question. Essentially, the blob is just a shape that covers 1 side of an object and is naturally rounded when an edge of it is being seen in the clipping mask.

You can just do it with the circle tool if that makes it easier :thumbsu:

Sorry, I shouldve clarified. I do understand. Id figured it out. But the one thing I learn at Uni about teaching is thaty you should always try to start teaching a 5 year old and then build up. Explain everything about what youre doing and why.

So a blob works for the shadowing on the collar, but why am I putting it there? A: By looking at the photo were using as a source (as you mentioned at the start) we can see that its based on the shadowing of a real life picture.

Ahh right, yeah good point.

Sorry about that, making this got pretty dry after 4 hours hahaha.

Noted and will do so next time :thumbsu:
