To save people the trouble that I had with picking a console to try out here's a simple flow chart to follow.

Haha, very good!
IMO, the shooter genre is the best, and is best played on a PC.

Racing and adventure games are better on a console though.

Forgot to add to the pc bit "Do you have the money, time and patience to keep your computer up to date to play the games" and "Do you have the patience and the know-how to fix the multitude of problems that could come up if you don't have a super computer (and sometimes even if you do)"
 
Well the NES offers a greater range of games and the games are much more fun to play IMO (Metroid, Zelda, Mario 3, Solstice,etc.), but the Sega Master System does come with Alex the Kidd installed and the controller is a bit more comfortable to use.

Go with the Nintendo.
