How to replace Howe?

Murphy - similar height, courageous, good intercept mark, neat kick but inexperienced. Plenty of talent and needs to be given a go to develop him

Scharenberg - Good intercept mark, but limited kick

Langdon - not realistic at present, but perhaps later in the season as another strong overhead marking option

Magden - Becomes a stopper and Moore attempts to pick up some of the intercept marking slack

Keane - Roll the dice on a big bodied, aggressive key back type and let Moore come off to intercept. Little underdone post quarantine return

Dunn - still a great one on one defender (I've been watching him a bit lately), good kick, experienced voice to pick up leadership and has played all of the scratch games against Richmond, Saints, Dogs

Either Murphy plays interceptor or Moore does and Dunn comes in

I think I'd consider Murphy first. I've liked what I've seen in him so far and reckon he'd do a good job.
Could be a silver lining to this particular cloud if we manage to blood another gun defender.

I don’t think you really can. He was in AA form.

But... I think the best option is to make Moore play the 3rd man role and bring in Dunn/Keane to play KD. Moore was brilliant in the air last night but he’s often restricted trying to take the tall forward too. Give him some freedom and while he probably won’t give us the same impact as Howe has, it will still be pretty good imo.

Dunn’s voice and leadership would be handy but not sold on Dunn Roughy and Moore, maybe it’s just the thought as Moore is athletic as they come.
Madge seems close clearly by playing rounds 1-2 but again not sold.
Keene and Murph will be players but we already have a bottom 4-5 players that are young and inexperienced so I’m going the forgotten man Shaz, his ticket seemed stamped but fingers crossed this could finally be his good luck story.
The latest match report noted his ‘creative flair’ so if selected let’s hope he bites the bullet and uses those kicking skills he clearly had as a junior.
He is clearly the most like for like with his intercept marking. No matter what way we go we just lost a big piece of our puzzle and it hurts. Hopefully Langdon keeps improving also.

I think I'd consider Murphy first. I've liked what I've seen in him so far and reckon he'd do a good job.

I think Shaz is much better at the specified role then Murphy, both have limited pace but Murphy at either level has never put up numbers like shaz is capable of. Murphy taller where as Scharenberg much better reader of the play and good with body use. Scharenberg just needs to back himself more with ball in hand and drive off hb.

Keane is the one I'd be keen to get games into as well, I still want Moore moved forward as I'd prefer to try win games then save them. Think he would dominate either end not just in defence.

If i was going for someone to replace the role of peel and intercept it would be Scharenberg or Keane. Whilst i actually think Buckley will go for Madgen.

Wouldn't give up Moore at CHB, he's simply too good and is still getting better and better. Scharenberg is my preference to play the Howe role, but wouldn't mind Murphy being given a go to prove his talent.

I feel like we'll need to bring in two defenders to match Howe's output. We rolled with only six defenders the last two weeks (unless you include Mayne who plays a bit of everywhere). No player will come close to matching Howe's organisation and composure. Will realistically need a combination of Howe's height and run which you won't get in any individual in the reserves - perhaps Quaynor can come in for run and carry out of the back 50.

A few different options

I like Moore playing the role he currently is, taking the dangerous forward...Cameron last night, but still backing himself to go for marks. Don’t change that.

So we are needing to replace the peel off loose intercept defender.

IMO that would rule out Magden and a Dunn.

Berg or Murphy probably leading candidates from outside the 22 (with Langdon not being fit).

But a left field suggestion, how about WHE!?

He isn’t giving much up forward to date, and I think we need to get Philips back on the wing, also will squeeze Treloar into the mid/forward mix this week.

So put WHE behind the ball? He has good hands, is a good user, can intercept, and has decent pace to cover a 3rd tall type if required.

If the club has truly given up on Scharenberg then I vote Murphy. Madgen is handy depth but he’s very limited as a player. I’d rather see a younger player developed in his place.

Same with Dunny, love his leadership and strength, not sure he has the pace mobility required, can't see him and Roughy in the same backline

Murphy raw and emerging, could he step up and take his chance

Madge has attributes but hasn't really taken his opportunities for mine

Langdon too soon

Keane very raw but had a bit of form and momentum pre-lockdown, not sure he comes in over other given we need some experience and influence coming there as well to replace Howey.

Hard call but, I would probably give Shaz first crack and then others on form if required, I can see us trying a few through there in coming weeks.

Another option is Greenwood when fit, brings hardness, experience and leadership and whilst shorter, is not too shabby in the air either. IQ is another option.

If Roughy doesn't go to the hub, things should get very interesting at the selection table

Has to be sharenburg for Howe, can’t play roughy, Dunn and Moore together and having Moore as both tall defender AND intercept his good. if roughy doesn’t travel to the Hub then Dunn comes in. We actually have good defensive depth thankfully.

I’m even open to bringing Dunn back and putting roughy forward, I just don’t like cox in our setup. That’s just me.

You dont replace Jeremy Howe, you mitigate the damage with someone else playing in his position.

The best person for the job is already in the side, but then, who would we play as the second tall forward?

Dave, you can't not play someone because they may breakdown in a game. Otherwise you'd never have backed in Moore, Elliott, DeGoey nor would you play Treloar again.
In reality too, players like Howe can get injured mid-game, even without much of an injury history.
If they're on your list and fit, you play them at whatever level. Simple.

If Dunne is 100% ready to go he should take Moore’s position as the KPD and give Darcy the freedom to play off his man and take the intercepts.
