Howzat! Kerry Packer's War

It did seem a little strange.......

Fantastic show though, and I'm learning quite a few things I never knew about the invention of World Series Cricket / One Day Cricket...

The WSC didn't invent one day cricket, they just made it more popular with the coloured clothing and lights. Remember though, this is a TV mini-series, not a documentary, so not everything you see is factual.

Definitely right about it not being based on facts - Lachy Hulme wasn't dropping the f-bomb enough

Haha!! Ian Chappell said the other day that Kerry Packer was getting a bum deal in that regard because most of the others were dropping f-bombs as well :)

Also, Tony Greig said they were giving way too much credit to John Cornell for being the ideas man. I haven't seen it yet, but I will.

Probably would've looked too much like an Underbelly series if they had everyone being foul-mouthed! Either that or they didn't want it running into a 3rd episode!

I thought the first eposide was better than the second.

Kind of rushed the SCG game for mine, considering that was the tipping point in it all.

agree, but there probably wasn't a great deal to add there - 50,000 turned up to a game that would've been make or break for KP, game played (the result wasn't a factor), decision vindicated, KP walks into the ACB offices to tell them that they are now his bitch...game over

Was a great show but I felt that it ended a bit suddenly, also does anyone know what became of that Warner bloke? The one that he used to rip shreds off for everything, I dont think they mentioned him in at the end?

There's a Gavin Warner listed on LinkedIn - working as a manager at The Hollywood Scriptwriter in Qld.

why didnt john cornell invite kerry back to the party at the end of ep 2?
there were 4 episodes, 2 each back to back. He didn't invite him back because he realised he had moved on to his next business transaction.

Yep - thats how I read it too.

Has their ever been more F-bombs dropped in one show?

I don't watch that 'Collingwood TV' thing they have, so I can't confirm. Do they talk to the toothless majority on that show, interviewing those in line at Centrelink?

It could have been the Glen Waverley Hawks ! hehe

Bloody good show, however Chappelli's character really has made no impact, and there have been one or two glaring omissions regarding the initial meetings and attempts at compromise. No surprise as these didn't paint Packer in a good light. I really look forward to Part 2 !

I've read books on the subject and the best is The Great Cricket Hijack by Christopher Forsyth.

Speaking of the Glen Waverley Hawks, i was one of the three foundation member and it was my idea that it should be called the Hawks because of my support for Hawthorn

But the jumpers in the show had stripes at the back with white number box which neither the HFC Finance jumper or the 1977 jumper would have had so not sure where those jumpers came from
I'm pretty sure the jumpers shown were striped blue and yellow, so basically no VFL team at all.

Really liked it and they re-created the era very well, obviously with poetic license. A big cross to the actor who played Lillee, he had absolutely no idea how to emulate the great man's unique bowling action, was actually really obvious and I would have loved to have seen that re-created with much more authenticity with all the style and menace the original gave us.

Yeah I know, but a fair chunk of it was. My dad was telling me about the things that happened also...

Anyway, I am now very much looking forward to this summers cricket... of course not as much as the next few weeks......

The character was based on a person named Lynton Taylor who was Packer's left hand man with Consolidated Press Holdings. Although I think they took some licence with the way he was treated, it was well known that Packer treated his executives poorly but his lower staff very well.

Yes, I finally got around to see the mini series, and that's precisely what happened. Packer had retained the TV rites, handed the running of the game back to the ACB, his job was done. On with the next venture.
