Reserves Wrap - NT Thunder - 15/08/2015 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Played key back on Ewing, probably the most dangerous forward in the competition. He did a really good job on him. Hugh was one of our best players, strong in the contest, spoiled the footy all day. He was a bit unlucky on the two goals Ewing kicked but I thought it was a really good performance. It certainly puts himself back into selection mode at that level with his performance. He ran really good offensive patterns also, being able to contribute in that area of the ground. He was terrific for us.

been really impressed by everything this kid has done this year. id be interested to see hom have a go in the midifield. not sure if he has the engine but has a big body, very competitive, good clean hands. bloody good defender though but we have a few similar sized types there with Gardiner, Dawson, Paparone.

Good observations Swanny. His TAC refrerences from coaches were great and he is a terrific contester. I was chatting with him briefly at Wesley training, and was impressed with his build and size.Very professional and strong character, like Gardiner, these guys can give us a very strong foundation in every sense.

I think he might be in Gardiner's shadow. More suited to smalls than Dizzy which could come in handy. Seems a lot better defensively than Dawson and Papa.

How five Kew Comets became shining stars

LUKE McDonald played in the ruck, ran with the ball and had a raking left foot. Jack Billings and Jack Sinclair swapped from the midfield to half-forward, and Jay Kennedy-Harris stayed close to goal, roving packs at top pace. Hugh Beasley was generally stationed at centre-half back, but could be swung forward when needed.

On Sunday, Beasley followed McDonald, Billings, Kennedy-Harris and Sinclair – in chronological order – by making his AFL debut, when he gathered nine disposals for the Brisbane Lions in their loss to Greater Western Sydney. Beasley's dad, Speros, coached the Comets for two years in the under-12s and under-13s (before McDonald invited Kennedy-Harris to join them) and said it had been brilliant to watch each emerge in his own way.

"It's tremendous, and we've shared all the moments with the families," Beasley said. "Everyone's happy and it's terrific the boys are doing well. They'll have their ups and downs, but it's been a quality outcome for good families and good boys. From the start they put their heads down and enjoyed their footy."

The Saints also showed some interest in him before the draft, and Speros laughs at the prospect of three of the Comets (and Oakleigh Chargers) landing at Seaford. "It would have been funny," Beasley said. "But Hugh was happy to go anywhere. If they had said he needed to go to Ukraine, I think he would have gone there. He's settled in really well at the Lions and they've been really good. They're looking after him, and trying to create something up there."

Last week was a big one for Beasley, who was elevated to the senior list and immediately picked to face the Giants. Speros watched from the Spotless Stadium stands as his son held his own and looked assured under pressure. "He didn't look out of water, he didn't shirk any issues, he threw himself at it and it was a good debut for a bloke who has worked his way through," Speros said. "I think the club was happy with him, and if they file him away for a while now, at least he got a taste."

Player Reviews: Part Ten

In his first season at the Club, mature-age rookie Hugh Beasley made a big impression. Carrying a big frame (developed through a period in the VFL), Beasley was able to slot comfortably into the Lions' backline during the season. Making his debut in Round 10 against GWS, Beasley went on to play six matches. Two of his better showings came against the Crows in Round 13 and against Fremantle in Round 14, where Beasley held his own against some of the league’s best forwards.

Reserves Wrap - Southport - 05/03/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Hugh played key back. He had to play a little bit undersized over the weekend against some of Southport’s bigger type forwards. He’s working on his flow and his offense at the moment in his game – the ability to get the ball in his hands pretty quickly. He was solid around contests, used the ball pretty well and had some good offensive drive. He’s working pretty hard on his stoppage positioning and being able to outperform his opponents.

Reserves Wrap: V Redland

Probably more patterns from Hugh. He was at times a bit too skinny and didn’t really get enough width. That was the same with our other defenders as well with how we flowed the footy. I think Hugh’s focus is again his offence with ball in hand and not hatching it as much. He was OK in the contest, probably got beaten a couple of times on the hit-up and use. He probably got too high as a defender at times too. We’ll focus on our backs this week with our ball movement because it’s probably an area of the game where we probably didn’t get bang for buck and create opportunities to score. The backs are starting to build a good relationship down there at the moment.

With Clarke's retirement, a real opportunity for a promotion to the senior list for Hugh if one of our other KPD's goes down.

I thought Hugh acquitted himself quite well when playing seniors last year and for mine, would be the better option than Jackson Paine.

Two Lions Injured In Reserves Match

Young forward Michael Close and defender Hugh Beasley have suffered injury setbacks in Sunday’s Reserves loss to Redland.

Beasley will also miss at least the next fortnight after he fractured two bones in his back in Sunday’s Reserves match loss to Redland.

Reserves Wrap - Sydney Swans - 01/04/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Only played just under a half – he got a knock on the knee and will spend 2-3 weeks on the sidelines with a low grade medial injury to his knee. He looked OK in his time whilst on the ground. He was clean with the ball. He only had it 6 times but went at 100% efficiency. It was very unfortunate, he can’t take a trick at the moment big Hugh. Hopefully it’s a small break and he’s back with us really quick.

Reserves Wrap - Aspley - 30/07/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

First game back from a long term injury (knee). He only played a half, and came on in the second half just to add one listed player to our six or seven Academy boys in our defence and some seniority. It was great for Hugh to be able to get through the game unscathed and just add a bit of an older head to our young boys down there. He had his 8 possessions and three rebound-50s. He looked composed with the ball in hand when he got it. We’re looking to build his game time this week against Sydney.

Reserves Wrap - Sydney - 06/08/16 (Shane Woewodin’s comments)

Like Reuben, Hugh had limited game time at 70% but was solid for us. He is still coming back from injury. He did a couple of good things down there as a defender and is showing some strong presence with his leadership, helping out Jackson in that area. He had it 15 times and took a couple of marks. It was a big day for the defenders, the opposition had 70 inside 50s, so the ball was coming in a fair bit and in a lot of contests regularly so the backs had their jobs cut out for them for the day.

Player Reviews: No. 41 - 47

A mature-age recruit, Beasley made his AFL debut in round 10, 2015 and while he played six games down the stretch in his first Season, the physical defender was unable to register a senior game in 2016.

Injuries to both his back and knee plagued Beasley’s 2016 with Brisbane’s NEAFL side in which he managed only seven games in a difficult year for the Lions reserves. Beasley was delisted at season’s end.

Coach’s comments

Another player who suffered an injury interrupted 2016 campaign after getting a taste of AFL football in 2015. Only played 5 or 6 NEAFL games as a key defender, was on the rookie list again but unfortunately has been delisted.

Today Hugh played CHB in the Tigers flag winning VFL side.
I quite liked Hugh and was a bit disappointed when he wasn’t given another year.

Me too but the VFL is probably his level. Even the commentators today remarked, after he shanked a kick, that disposal by foot wasn't his greatest strength. He is tough and can take a contested mark though.

The hashtag #drafthughbeasley is being posted. Fools. Lions are way ahead of the curve and have already put him through his whole AFL career.
