If a band or artist from yesterday (eg. The Beatles) just signed their first record deal today, and were planning on releasing the same first album as they did originally, how do you think they'd go?

For example, Would they make it far enough into their careers to make Sgt. Peppers? Would their record company let them release Sgt. Peppers?

-Don't limit this to the beatles.

The BIG question is would any band/artist of yesterday (starting from scratch) be able to get themselves more airplay then the crap we have to hear each day on commericial radio? Eg. Nickleback, Shannon Noll, Black Eyed Peas.

i think that in todays climate ... mostly a resounding "NO"

Most "successful" musicians and releases in this day and age (finacially) are fabricated - pre concieved .

They pop up for an album or two , get hyped to the schithouse by multi marketing and payola ... make thier squillions , then fade off into the distance to squander it on piffle .. re-appearing on tacky game shows years later .

anything of substance requires a solid foundation ... hence , if the Beatles walked in and dropped that album on the record company moguls desk , they would be thrown straight out the door .

Only bands and artists that are capable of bucking the trend and "making it" on there own terms purely on thier creativity , talents and vision , can earn the right to preserve thier integrity and release what is truelly "thiers"

I think that is what you asked ... kind of ?

If the likes of Jet and Lenny Kravitz get gigs in the charts I reckon there's a few bands/albums out there that would chart if released now.

i think the Beatles songs done to suit modern times would still do well and be popular, but of course not as big as what they were.

if the beatles did not exist, some other band would of taken their spot.

If my favourite band of all time, Rush, formed now, I think you could bet everything you owned on them not lasting almost 40 years! In today's mainstream music climate, where looking cool/hot>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>musical substance.

I'd like to think if BLONDIE started today they would still be a success, but I'm not totally convinced because musical talent doesn't seem to be a neccessity today. I think they have the ingredients to be a success, a photogenic, attractive, sexy lead singer with a beautiful, versatile voice. The guys look like dorks, but next to Deborah they look cool. All six members are reasonably good songwriters, and all can write some instantly catchy tunes. If promoted correctly, Heart of Glass could be just as huge today as it was in 1978/79.

Garbage still do alright, so I reckon they'd get a decent showing.

I also sometimes think about the fact that most of our most loved or celebrated or well known singers would not have made it to the first round of Australian Idol - they are too unique or dont have the right image. Slightly off topic, sorry.

Sorry to be a bit closed-minded, but if the Beatles popped up now, they'd be better than they were back then. Back then they had competition. Provided they didn't spend their millions on drugs and kill themselves, they would be 'the band' today.

Interesting question though, which of the best singers would've won Australian Idol? I couldn't see Freddie Mercury getting too many votes, despite being possibly the best singer there has been. Bob Dylan wouldn't make it to the SMS stage, not a great voice, just a brilliant songwriter.

I'm almost certain that they wouldn't be able to make a second album.
Off the Beatles' first album, (Please Please Me) the song I Saw Her Standing There would be huge on the charts, probably #1 for a fair while. It's simply a raw rock song, something not seen these days.

Twist & Shout and Love Me Do would also be go well. I'd be surprised if a record company turned down a band producing hits like those.

I disagree. The Clash have aged a lot. I don't think their stuff would get a look in. Very dated.

Train in Vain, Should i stay or should i go. Rock the Casbah would all still have some appeal if released today.

Also their Dub work was pretty good so there would be a market for their work within that genre too.

If Rancid can shift albums these days then The Clash certainly could because Rancid draw heavily on their Clash influences.

1. As much as I like ISHST, it's a pop song song. It's raw and a bit more edgier than standard pop, but it's pop.
2. None of those songs would cut it. Not that they aren't quality, the sound is too far aged.

1. Coldplay claim to be a rock band. IMO, that fact alone means ISHST has to be a rock song.
2. I don't reckon the sound would've aged a lot. Maybe recording techniques have improved now and the sound produced would be better if they recorded it now, but I still reckon the four Liverpool boys would get a fair following.

I reckon Please Please Me wouldn't be the deal-breaker. With the Beatles, A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale would be my concern. Once they reach Help! and Rubber Soul they're home and hosed really, with Revolver, Sgt Peppers and the Magical Mystery Tour coming up.
