In the last couple of months, I have noticed a few 'ice spikes' growing in my fridge in the ice block tray. Never having seen these before, I looked them up and there is a fairly straight-forward explanation for them.

What is interesting is that I have never seen them before. It seems that purity of the water is a big driver in the production of ice spikes. Distilled water seems the best way to generate them artificially.
So, has the recent big wet changed the purity level or chemical composition of Melbourne's water supply? Are the MMBW using new purifying techniques?
Either way, the spikes are pretty cool.
