If richmond swoop in and take knobel at Pick 1 in PSD who would the blues go for? Would Pagan take a gamble on Zantuck and fit him in our back line or go for a young project player?

For the 0.01% chance that the tigers somehow manage to find the space in their TPP for Knobel, I hope we take a Zantuck ahead of let's say Mckee (not that I want either)

remember that the tigers will still be paying a substantial portion of Zantuck's salary in 2005 so it resticts their ability to afford Knobel's demands ($150k x 2/3 years i think)

If that did happen, I would just take one of the young guys that was expected to be drafted but wasn't. We still only have to give them 1 year but that is included in the cap as opposed to the rookie listed players wages. We have three spots on our rookie list filled at the moment with the O'hAilpin brothers and Pleming so have less spots available than usual. Not an ideal scenario but we don't need any more experienced top up players this year.

While i want knobel to help out our ruck stocks part of me hopes this happens ... then cos the psd is b4 rookie draft we could effectively have the number 1 pick in the rookie draft!!!!

i want Eddie Betts - Calder Cannons - perfect crumming fwd imo!!!
26 November 1986, 173cm, 75kg

Betts had an outstanding junior career, which included being named an All-Australian in the under-18 championships in 2003. He also represented Victoria Metropolitan in 2004. Betts was also a dual Calder Cannons premiership player in 2003/04. A small, crumbing forward with terrific pace, he has been compared in some circles as an Aaron Davey type of player, which could make him an interesting prospect in December.

I hope we do get Knobel, but he is gone I hope we go for a toung kid.

Eddie Betts sounds ok but I'm not sure if we will go for a fp specialist.

The amazing thing wont be if Richmond pick up Knobel, but if Knobel goes at NUMBER 1!!!!!!! But honestly, i cant see Richmond picking Trent Knobel up at Number 1, especially when Steve McKee is trainning with them and Knobel is trainning with you (Carlton) isnt he? Im sure this is what would happen.....

Richmond- Steve McKee
Collingwood- Blake Carracella
Carlton- Trent Knobel
Kangaroos- Lance Picioane
Fremantle- Jarred Schofield
Essendon- Ty Zantuck
St. Kilda- Pass
Port Adelaide- Ruory Kirkby
Richmond- Heath Grundy
St.Kilda- Pass

I'm not so sure we'll be paying much, if anything at all for Zantuck in '05. Remember it was Zantuck who did want to play for the club, not the club looking to get rid of him. He alienated a lot of players with his loose cannon behaviour. Basically, he wanted to leave so why should the club pay??? Could be a basic minimum wage he gets paid out but I'm confident it will give us some space in the PSD.

Stay away from him blues. He's a nutcase.

I've heard a few things about Ty but nothing concrete .... anyone out there know exactly what makes him such a basket case.

I know he didn't really pay much respect to his team mates but what else has he done to earn him the reputation that he has????

How can the Tiges and Saints pass in the PSD when the AFL has told all clubs they must run full lists next year ? Or is that not correct?

I'm pretty sure that all 16 clubs must have 38 players. I'm not 100% sure if veterans are included in the 38 or not. If they must pick and they're full up with the salary cap then I'd expect them to take a young kid or a player on minimum wage.

it is definitely not the full contract amount but it has been reported that it is a substantial portion of the monies due in 2005. The amount has been reported as being 50% up to 65-70%. The general view is that Richmond cant accomodate Knobel contract demands.

I think Ty has a lot to offer. Remember that he is only 22 and there are a lot of kids his age that screw up all the time. I think a club can do a lot worse than picking up a Zantuck.

if richmond took knobel wouldnt we just choose mckee or possibly porter
I'd stay well clear of McKee. Although Porter is old I'd prefer him over McKee. Maybe Pagan will try get Porter because he did get him to the Roos when he was there. I reckon under the right coach Porter can be a good player.

Tigers Knobel Gesture

RICHMOND may trump Carlton and snare Trent Knobel in Tuesday's pre-season draft.

While the Tigers have allowed their former big man Steve McKee to train at Punt Rd in recent weeks, they are giving strong consideration to using the draft's No. 1 pick for the former Saint ruckman.

Richmond also has the final selection in the draft at No. 8.

Just seven clubs will participate on Tuesday after an examination of each outfit's books by the AFL investigations department.

St Kilda was one club ruled ineligible because it was nearing limits on total player payments. The Saints were told they would need to restrict themselves to 38 players, including veterans Robert Harvey and Justin Peckett.

Seven clubs were determined eligible for the draft: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fremantle, Kangaroos, Port Adelaide and Richmond.

The Magpies are favoured to take Blake Caracella, the Kangaroos are keen on Lance Picioane, Fremantle wants Jarrad Schofield, Port is considering Ty Zantuck and Essendon might take Justin Blumfield.

Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast and Western Bulldogs already have full lists for 2005.

AFL club chief executive officers met yesterday in Melbourne and were told former Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab would play a role in the revamped tribunal system.

Draft gloom for McKEE
12 December 2004 Sunday Herald Sun
By JON RALPH

RICHMOND has told former Collingwood ruckman Steve McKee it will not select him in the pre-season draft and is seeking clarification with the league about fitting Trent Knobel's contract into its AFL-approved budget.

The club told McKee yesterday it did not feel his troublesome groin could stand up to the rigours of the AFL and it would look elsewhere in Tuesday's draft.

The Tigers expect an AFL decision by tomorrow, which would clear the way for them to draft Knobel to the last spot on their list.

The club is well within the salary cap, but after the AFL had its accountants scrutinise its vastly scaled-back projections for 2005 it is keen to run any variations by the AFL.

Knobel has put a price on his head, but his two-year contact is only slightly above what the Tigers would have paid McKee.

If, as expected, the AFL approves Richmond's offer to sign Knobel for two years, it will swoop in before Carlton, which has flagged its intention of drafting the former Lion and Saint.

The Tiger move leaves McKee in limbo, with the majority of clubs having pledged to sign particular players.

With first selection in Tuesday's rookie list, Richmond is expected to take Ruory Kirkby, a key position player from Echuca desperately unlucky to be overlooked in the national draft.

Who will you pick now?

Maybe we'll trump them back by taking Kirkby.

that would be hilarious ... although im not a huge fan of kirkby ... BUT ... i think seeing as we got bryan, have deluca, french lets get a kid not porter!!!

i really want eddie betts ... a little excitement machine ala aaron davey :D

i would like knobel but wont mind if we dont get him!!!

I think this will be a blessing in disguise.

Unless a ruckman is in an elite group (White, Everitt etc), you do not need 2+ in a side at one time. Knobel does nothing around the ground and it would be a lot more beneficial to put some time into a youngster such as Kirkby.

French is no world beater, but Brisbane have proved that all you need to do is throw some hard bodies into the ruck and surround them with pacy, hard-at-it midfielders and you will do fine.

Until we have a chance at developing or drafting an elite ruckman, let's not pick up any more duds (ala Knobel, McKee, Porter), and instead go for some exciting youth.
