If it is 1.55 pm and taz agrees to go to freo and pick 8 is all we could get IMO the club should take it. I probably wouldn't have a few days ago but heres why I would now-
I reckon the chances of getting a gun player with pick 8 are atleast 20-30% higher than with 13 or 16. Some are suggesting the 8th pick is as good as a top 3 pick in previous years. No sure if it is the case but if so then it is a very fair deal and some unbiased people would probably argue it is slightly in our favour. If anyone thinks a club is going to pay well over the odds they are kidding themselves.
Then there is the issued of Taz himself. He is now 26 and has had 2 really poor seasons and 1 average season in the last 3 years. He also carries alot of baggage. Everyone talks about the culture needing to change at Collingwood. I reckon this would send a pretty strong message to the rest of the playing group that no one is safe. If taz has the same season next year he has this year he will be worth a 2nd round pick at best.
Then there is the issue of Rusling and Clokes development. I said to a colleague of mine late in the season that if rusling shows enough when taz was out of the side that I thought it would be the end of taz. I reckon he did and I think that rusling looked better when he played and taz didn't. I think these to should improve enough to cover taz's loss.
I have a feeling(just my opinion) that the club is keener to let him go than we think. I reckon the club has played it as well as they can. If people want to come on and slag the club saying they are weak if they accept this and that then so be it, but remember you cannot put a gun to a clubs head and say we will only accept this.
If we can get more than 8 its a bonus but id be happy with pick 8 or 13 and a decent player
just my thoughts
