For the next month I have to use unsecured wifi. It's a long story but im not stealing it. It's in a massive apartment building, facing a busy street, so god knows how people have access to it.

Anyway my questions:

1. - I can be in the same room as the actual modem.. So, If I disable the wifi in my laptop and physically connect to the modem with the cable, does this make me more safe?

2. - I really need to check my online bank right now... It is a https site, will i be safe logging in ?

Thanks for any help !

If you can connect to the router physically, is there a need for it to have wi-fi switched of at all?

I wouldn't recommend leaving it on and unsecured if you can avoid it at all.

I'd disable wi-fi on the router and only go with the ethernet connection.

Realistically, if you absolutely need to have wi-fi switched on and unsecured, you're probably not going to have anything too malicious (not that it can't happen, but like leaving your house unlocked, it doesn't mean that someone will just walk in.)

You will probably get people leeching your bandwidth though.

Hi, thanks for the reply.. Yeah, I can't switch off the wifi, it isn't mine and a few other people are using it

Just getting into the same room as the modem is taking some 'mission impossible' style undercover work

At the moment I am in the 'modem room' but connected with my own personal cable that i bought today, and with wifi disconnected on my laptop

If your router is going to remain unsecured then connecting with an ethernet cable doesn't really offer you any real benefits. You may as well just connect via wi-fi.

Disabling it on your laptop won't help as the network you're connected to still allows people to connect wirelessly, with no security.

If you're not responsible for the internet connection the router is using then you don't have too much to worry about. It's not really any differen't from connecting at McDonalds. Run your own firewall etc on your laptop and you'll be fine.

The person leaving an unsecured network just lying there is the person taking the biggest risk.

I was connected with a 2 metre cable, sitting on a crappy chair a few metres away, now i can go back to the next floor and lay on my bed knowings its the same level of security

There is slightly more risk as you're still sending your data wirelessly but in reality, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
