Port Adelaide came back from a 7 goal margin during the second quarter...and a 25 point margin halfway thru the last term to get up and win by apoint at Richmond today against West Adelaide.
In the toughest game ive seen for a good 7 years, Port were behind all day, until about 80 seconds to go when makeshaft Forward Mark Wade punched a ball into the port points for a rushed behind which would be the deciding margin.
Wests main downfall was there incesant playing of the man and not the ball all day. There were countless amounts of hard body clashes all day, and about 12 blood rules, bringing back memories of the bloodbath Port v West days of the 50s and 60s.
In one of the most biased umpiring displays ever seen on a football field (thanx to that man again Richard Williams) Darryl Poole got reported for a push to the face....where as only moments earlier right in front of teh umpire Pooley got decked with a fist from behind, which was unsurprisignly left alone.
Poole (twice) Wait, Warrior, Watkins (twice) Ormond Allen, Mcdowall, Wade and Twomey all went off due to the blood rule.
What made Ports spirited traditional fightback even more special was the fact that Port had only 17 fit men up at 3/4 time. Ormond Allen, Wait, Poole and Clayton all carried injuries into the last term.
As West kicked their final goal for the last quarter (and their 5th goal as a DIRECT result to a free) they went 25 points ahead. In the final 10 minutes Port played their hearts out, concentrated on getting the ball forward and played bloody good footy. 'Rhino' O Conner got on top in the ruck in the last 10 minutes...Wade did well up forward, but the spark was the move which saw the Traitor Eugene Warrior shifted up forward, kicking 1 or 2 goals, a behind (which proved to be handy) and set up another goal. Eugene kicked a goal, as did Fiegert, and when Poulton levelled the scores with only 2 minutes left, West had a game on their hands. The ball got forced forward again, and Mark Wade thumped the ball thru ports goals for a behind which wont he game for the mighty magpies.
Definatly the win can go to Stephen Williams wonderful coaching in the last half...he moved resident Half Back Nigel Fiegert up to Half Forward for an immediate impact...he put Poole in the pocket, and moved Warrior from a wing to Full Forward. Rhino and Tony Brown got into the game in the last quarter and dominated a midfield in which West had dominated for the previous 3 quarters.
Port listed players Cassisi and Hollands, Barret, Twomey and Mueller had plenty of the ball.
I am also pleased to report that West Adelaide has recruited a NEW member to the cheersquad. It is now a 4 man cheersquad. Cheers all round for that.
This is why everyone hates port....they think the game is won, but you never underestimate the fighting spirit of the port adelaide magpie. A fantastic win...definatly up there witht he best ive seen.
