Does anybody know of a particular reason why this html function, and in fact the other functions of this ilk (eg echo) simply will not work for me?

Format used is <!--#include "file.html"-->

Is there something wrong with this?

you might need to have your page saved in .shtml
or for <!--#include "file.html"--> you may need to add path
<!--#include "/something/file.html"--> keep trying...

I thought of that, and tried a few combinations ... but it seems that YES, you're MEANT to put the rem code in the command. Strange, I know, but everybody seems to think that's the syntax.
Have a look here - this site suggests you need to use file="file.html" rather than just "file.html"

Your server definitely needs SSI (server-side includes) of some kind. otherwise your browser won't intepret it as it is in the rem tags.

so it's either in SHTML or ASP, or PHP, or similar. it's put together on the server end of things.

I've since discovered that the ISP needs to support SSI, which it seems mine doesn't.

Oh well, I managed to do the same thing with <!--<script src="file.js">--> so all is hunky dory.

Thanks for your help, folks.

I do have to preced every line with document.write, and close off each line ... AND change all double-quotes to singles, so its a bit more bother, but not a lot ...

The entire top, left and bottom section of every one of my 3300 footypedia pages is provided by just two files, topstrip.js and botstrip.js ... so its come in very handy!
