Jamie Mott just rode favourite Cashius Play to a head win at Ballarat, however apparently he weighed in light and was disqualified.

I've never seen this happen before - not impressed to say the least! How does it work, you just lose your money or is it considered a scratching?

The horse is disqualified and you do your money. I backed one at Grafton earlier this year and the jockey did the same thing. I think the jockey was Coleman and he got suspended I think he got three months, I noticed he has just returned to riding. I reckon Mott might be out for the whole spring carnival for that mistake

Golden Hawk,

I had $10 the win the 2nd placed runner and ditched my ticket. I was later informed that the winner was disqualified and I had to ask the TAB owner to Emu through the bin where the losing tickets are deposited.

She found it, it on ly paid $36, but slung her $10 as a finders fee.

I learnt a golden rule, never throw/rip ticket until correct weight is given!!!

Lucky for you! I reckon it's a bit rough they don't refund your money, the horse was never a winning chance so it's almost a scratching in my book.

Besides, the jockeys have to weigh themselves before they race, so you have to ask how it can happen.

It's pretty rare, I've seen it more with placegetters than winners. Have seen a lead bag fall out when a saddle shifted thats the main one. Rare because of the weight allowance given for the vest and the fact the bridle can be called upon to help make up the allotted weight.

I think its fair enough that you do your money. Especially from an integrity view point. Thems the rules. The stewards, clerk of scales and jockeys all responsible for getting it right. Surely enough cross checking to make sure its fool proof, or close to it.

Extract of stewards' report:

Subsequent to the running of this race J. Mott rider of Cashius Pay 1st past the post weighed in more than ½ kg under his declared weight of 58 kgs. After taking evidence from J. Mott, Ms. Lisa Cartwright, Clerk Of Scales, and M. Ellerton trainer, the Stewards acting under AR.143.(a) disqualified Cashius Pay. Subsequently Stewards further interviewed J. Mott, M. Ellerton, the Clerk Of Scales and Mr. E.J. Leydon part owner, to establish the reason why J. Mott weighed in light. At the conclusion of this inquiry J. Mott was found guilty of a charge under AR.143.(a) for having weighed in more than ½ kg under the declared weight of 58 kgs and fined $2000. During this inquiry the Stewards heard evidence from J. Mott that he was of the belief that he weighed out at 57 kgs and not the allotted 58 kgs and he had ridden with all gear he had weighed out with. The Clerk of Scales gave evidence that J. Mott had in fact weighed out correctly at 58 kgs. Given the nature of the evidence the Stewards were unable to make a certain finding as to the reason why J. Mott had weighed in light.
