Hey, I was just wondering how I could increase my vertical leap? I'm 198-200cm and will probably be playing mainly ruck again next year. I currently have an average jump and would like to know how I can increase it? Is doing squats with weights the only way?

Incorporating skipping into your workout should help. Put more power into your jumps than normal though.

plyometrics

http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/plyometricexercises.html

you want a pretty good strength base before getting into plyo's so your first looking to get stuff like your squats, deadlifts, and pretty much any resistance training that will improve the strength in your legs, hips and core region. and then you move onto more power based training such as plyo's after a couple of months.

those same exercises will also help you in gaining some speed so it's a bit of double whammy, but you also want to incorporate speed specific training such as sprint work to get a better effect on your speed.

generally takes some time, but that's why we've got 5 months of pre-season :)

Increases in your lower body strength/power will correlate well to increases in your VJ (particularly standing VJ) if your relative strength/power is below par (which is the case for most, especially tall athletes).

Other than that improving plyometric ability via force absorption and reactive jumps is particularly important for improving running VJ.

See this article plus definitely check out Kelly Baggett's site for further info.

Always think of the classic Seinfeld episode whenever the discussion of vertical leap makes its way into conversation.
