Hey Guys,

Just a thought... have we ever created an indigenous guernsey? Looking at Fremantle's version and thinking I would love to purchase a crows special indigenous round guernsey.

Also just as a side note, do we have any indigenous players likely to play this week?

Would surely be one of the only teams without an indigenous player currently in the team.

That is of course if I'm not forgetting someone.

Explain?

Acknowledging race isn't necessarily racist.
I'm sorry, but selecting a particular race (so discriminating against others) to put above others is quite clearly racist. Just imagine if this was "non-indigenous" round and a "non indigenous" Guernsey....because that is how the AFL is telling everyone is sees the world.

why do we have an indigenous Guernsey? and not say an Italian Guernsey ? or an Anglo Celtic Guernsey? All AFL guernseys are designed for everyone regardless of race, religion etc etc

Don't you just love positive discrimination? Another pearler from a nation that abhors political incorrectness. Celebration for the sake of celebration; it's a shame that our society has to be seen to be doing its bit, yet is as willing, if not for to lambast every culture that isn't anglo. Society is ****ed.

Or considering last week, a ranga guernsey.

I think DangerSloane's OP is full of good intent. We have a special indigenous round so why not a special guernsey? We can't change the AFL's misguided thinking but we can embrace something that discriminates positively.

However

Cap speaks the truth.
The AFL is full-on stupid to have such a round. It highlights and helps widen the very cultural divide the AFL has intended to bridge. It looks like tokenism rather than anything the AFL is trying to achieve by it.

I don't have a problem with indigenous round, as it is celebrating indigenous culture, history and its impact on the game.

I do have a problem with something like the All stars game in the NRL, which essentially pits the "whites v the aboriginals". Thats not inclusive, thats a "us against them" approach.

I don't see a need for any guernsey except the tricolour hoops. Ever. All the rest are shit.

If only it was tricolour hoops :(

Looking forward to the day they get rid of the blue panels down the front/side/back of the jumper.

I still like the jumper, still annoys me though.

You don't seem to understand racism.

Celebrating indigenous culture doesn't mean we're punishing old fat white middle class guys. Or anyone else.

Some damage needs to occur for it to be racism. Doing something positive for someone doesn't mean that you're doing something negative to everyone else.

If an indigenous round is racist, does that make women's round sexist? If you think too hard on the implications that has for Umpire Appreciation round you may well burst the fabric of the space time continuum.
women round isn't as sexist IMO because it is acknowledging those who contribute to the game, but can't play.

anyone can become an umpire, you can't suddenly become indigenous now can you.

Oh I understand racism well, it appears you seem to be missing it... because everyone can see it...

Everyone might like celebrity diving, but it doesn't make it right.

You think race being highlighted and celebrated is a racist act. You're wrong, for the reason I pointed out above.

This is not a question of "democratic voting makes it right". It's not a question of popularity rule. It is a simple question of what makes something racist. And for that, you clearly need some damage to occur, and celebrating the actions of indigenous footballers does nothing to damage those Joe Average white guys sitting at home.

I hate to say it, but this is not a debatable question with grey areas. It is a simple question that is very black and white.

Wait - now even the question is racist because it's black and white. Hell, you just can't win.

that is the problem with most 'isms it isn't about the popular opinion

it is pretty simple, change indigenous round to white Australian round, i.e we are celebrating all that white Australia has brought to the game of Australian rules football.....do you see how this could be construed as racist?

you clearly don't understand racism at all if you don't see how segregating one community above others, even if it is for celebration, is not racism at its core.....

So no, I'm not talking about Tyranny by the majority, I'm talking about racism.

No no no. The most important thing is that we separate the concept of racism from oppression, so we can complain at any measure taken to try and redress generations of structural inequality.

It wouldn't be racist to have a round celebrating "white" culture, but it would be pointless and highly politically incorrect (ESPECIALLY if you chose to call it the "White Australia round"). If you're a white, heterosexual male, like the majority of AFL players, you're born into a position of extreme privilege based on the fact that you're far less likely to automatically receive any prejudice against you for your race, gender or sexuality. Assuming you actually understand the purpose of indigenous round, what possible positive purpose could a white round serve? Ridiculous point.
