I think he is called the 'libero' not sure of the pronunciation but their job is to stay in the back court and defend I think, they can't go into the front row, as such they aren't heaps tall and their talent is getting under the serve. If you watch it again the commentators will explain it.
BTW the indoor volleyball is the highlight of the games for me so far, the Russians v the Aussies last night was compelling veiwing.

Totally agree, the Aussies took it up to them, just couldn't clinch either the 2nd or 3rd sets which they were right in.

BTW, how much did that big tall Russian bloke look like Lurch from the Addams Family?

yep that's pretty much correct:) The lib-eh-ro (libero) is a specialist defensive position, they cannot play front court or serve. basically because the spikers(front court) are often so damn tall many may not be terribly great at defense, libero is a position designed to "swap" with 1 of these big basteds so as to improve defense whilst still allowing the side to be as attacking in front court. if the libero played front court they'd probably be as hopeless there as the spiker is in back court.

hope that helps.

yeahp, it's a good new rule this libero thing. Most sports need more offence to make them more interesting, but wallyball needed more defence, i.e. a specialist guy to help keep the ball alive more often, so there's more rallies overall.

thank god SBS is showing some decent events.
Channel 7 bought the rights and they allowed SBS to show olympics. But apparently SBS is getting some really high ratings and channel 7 is not dominating as much as they would have liked, so we might never see 2 channels showing olympics again.

The world cup last year was awesome viewing, the few matches I've seen at the Olympics have been very good as well. If people are willing to give it a go they quickly get right into because it is pretty simple but at the same time there is a fair bit going on. Some of the spikes and blocks are spectacular.
