The team that played Collingwood was:
Barlow, Barry, Bevan, C Bolton, J Bolton, Crouch, Davis, Dempster, Everitt, Fosdike, Goodes, Hall, Jolly, Kirk, Malceski, Mathews, McVeigh, O'Keefe, O'Loughlin, Richards, Roberts-Thomson, Schneider

I guess that for round one (based on what little information we have) we'll see:

Certain outs: Dempster, Malceski (knee), Schneider;
Possible injuries: Everitt (knee ?), Fosdike (knee ?);
Possible omits: Barlow

Certain ins: Ablett, Mattner, Kennelly, Buchanan
Possible ins: Schmidt, Brennan

Any other likely ins or outs?

Craig Bird will possibly be a in. Or am i being to hopeful? Also if Everitt is out Roos might play Currie.

I would think that Barlow will still be in.
If Spida does miss will Currie play? Is he fit at the moment or will they share the second ruck spot with White and LRT alternating across the backline?

Schmidt has to play! He had served his time at the ressies, proved to be an AFL-level player, he has to play if the management is serious about making use of his talent.

Agreed. Schmidt deserves his shot and i will be very disappointed if he isnt a regular in the team by the end of the season.

Bevan and Crouch are definite outs if we are to improve. Both were genuine liabilties against the Pies.

Ideally Matthews, J Bolton and McVeigh also.

Add Schmidt, Bird, Brennan, Mattner and Kennelly. Surely that 5 blitz the former.

What are their advantages over the other 5 - speed, marking ability, cleaner disposal, younger legs, agility, more creative and more finesse = better footballers.

How forgetful - LRT is a shoe in for CHB.

He's already in the team. Played the last couple of the season.

Injuries and departures suggest there's room for a couple of fringe players to get a go. But that's what the next 3 weeks are for - to sort out those who are most ready. Barlow, for instance, you wouldn't have in based on last weekend's performance but he's got a little while to show he's not gone backwards.

From that performance on the weekend his opinion of his own ability has been somewhat enhanced.I have been around football clubs for along time and had alot of dealings with young players and his body language and attack on ball and man told me he is clearly very comfortable with himself.Yes it is only one game of the new season but before i get howled down it didnt look good.Lets hope for his and the clubs sake im wrong. If im right i suppose he will be brought back to earth by Kirk and co.

With Malceski out, we need much better disposals and delivery from our midfielders. It's interesting reading from this website:

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/club/0,26579,19773,00.html

My pet stat in terms of attacking for midfielders is effective disposals % (there's no point in getting heaps of disposals if you're not doing anything with it). Our midfielders were generally poor last year at generally around 74% (Kirk, Goodes, Ablett, Jude Bolton etc.) are all around that mark. And Fosdike is bottom of the pack at 70% (one of the reasons I didn't rate his last season at all, despite him racking up plenty of possessions). The worst player with Senior games that I could find with a lower% is Brennan with a whooping 67% effective rate.

On the other hand, Davis and Schmidt (though they play more in the forward line) are at around 80% - so it makes sense to try to deliver the ball to them close to the attacking 50 rather than having it in the hands of Jude or Fosdike.

Midfield and the forward line for me was always the main problem last season, and ideally, I will like to see Matthews and Crouch dropped for players who can actually kick the ball (well). Losing Fosdike for the early rounds hopefully will open up a space for an attacking-minded midfielder with a good effective disposal % (hopefully Moore and Schmidt..Maybe even Bird).

OK, let's follow this through. If you have:
Outs: Bevan, Crouch, Mathews, J Bolton, McVeigh
Ins: Schmidt, Bird, Brennan, Mattner, Kennelly

then who do you suggest should come in for:
Outs: Dempster, Malceski (knee), Schneider (and possibly Everitt, Fosdike)

?

He's physically ready. The buzz about Bird has meant he has flown under the radar but he can and IMO will play seniors this year. One round of NAB Cup form doesn't mean much. I don't really rate MOD.

You can only select a player on form and since Veszpremi didnt play the NAB Cup then he cant be selected for Round 1 in my opinion. Of the Rookies that were not mentioned i think O'Dwyer showed the best form and his performance against Hawthorn shows that he is close to making the first team.

I would rate the omission of a fit Mathews, J Bolton or McVeigh as extremely unlikely.

I can imagine Bevan (missed round one in 2006, 2007) and/or Crouch (Schaublized) possibly making room for new blood (eg Bird, Jack) but more extensive changes would be unprecedented under Roos.

Oh no doubt I would think they have Buckley's of getting dropped. I was just answering your hypothetical.

Hall, Goodes, Kirk etc. didn't play against Hawthorn. Does that mean that they won't get selected for Round 1?

Anyway there are still plenty of practice matches left, you can't just base it on one NAB cup game. O'Dwyer played okay, not spectacular and I think he is a loooooong way from the seniors at the moment.

Thats different because Roos uses the NAB Cup to try youth so you wouldnt expect our older players to get a run.

True. Though after the Hawthorn game i do rate O'Dwyer and think he could make a very handy AFl player.

?????? There are still 3 NAB Challenge games to go. If Veszpremi gets a go in these and shines he could still play in round 1.

However a bit of a hypothetical I suspect. I don't think he played much last year so it may take him a while to get fit enough to play - same for Daniel O'Keefe.
