I noticed nicko's post about the ABC cricket magazine, but does anyone remember the great Aussie cricketing monthly magazine called Inside Edge?

I used to subscribe to the publication up until they went quarterly/yearly a few years back. But from 1992-2000 I must have well around 100 magazines.

Post up if you used to buy/browse through at newsagencies.

I used to buy it on a fairly regular basis during the 1992-2000 period. I never particularly liked it as it was superficial and jingositic but as it was the only cricket magazine I knew of (and being a cricket fan) for many years, a mediocre cricket magazine is better then nothing.

However, I haven't bought it for a couple of seasons and there are a couple of reasons why. Firstly, it was given a disastourous makeover in 2000 (presumably because of falling sales) that saw it become more glossy, superficial, lowbrow and inane - it was probably summed up by the fact that it had several pages of cricket equipment advertisements of women wearing pads, gloves and not much else!

In short, it looked as if the editorial staff from Packer's 'Ralph' magazine had taken over the publication. There were letters published in the second edition of the new version from women rightfully complaining that while there were numerous gratiutous pages of women in bikinis, the already neglible coverage of women's cricket had become virtually non-existent.

The makeover obviously didn't help sales as 'Inside Edge' doesn't publish monthly anymore - it's now reduced to publishing annual season reviews and only has two or three editions coming out ever year.

Another reason I stopped buying 'Inside Edge' is that a few years ago I became aware of the English cricket magazine 'Wisden Cricket Monthly'. It is everything I look for in a cricket magazine, it has informed and substantial articles on the game of cricket. And while it's directed towards an English market, it provides an excellent coverage of the world game with many articles emenating from outside England.

It's an expensive buy at $12.95, but well worth it for any cricket enthuisaist.

i used to buy every edition a few years back, have about 50 or so of them. its good looking back through memory lane sometimes by flicking thru old editions.

i stopped buying it a few years ago coz i was buying them and not reading all of it. the standard of the magazine went downhill. it turned into some sort of tabloid womans day garbage with far too many ads and promos posing as editorials. it certainly doesnt have the quality articles it used to several years ago.

the reason i was plugging the ABC magazine is coz it will (hopefully) never fall into the same trap, coz it is published by the ABC.

I used to get it on a semi-regular basis, and still do. Basically, if I've run out of reading material, I'd get that. Certainly made plenty of flights seem shorter!
