Seems to me that the draft works like:

Whitfield - number 1 pick - GWS (finishing 18th).

Then there are about 7-9 players that could really fall in any order. For example, there doesn't seem much 'in it' between Viney and Toumpas, etc. All will depend on what Gold Coast feel they need more, there is no way they will bid on Viney, just to make Melbourne use their F/S pick. If they bid on Viney, it will be because they rate him the best inside mid in the draft, and want him on their list for that reason.

FWIW, I think they will nominate Viney. As far as I can see, GC lack a true inside mid to compliment their nice selection of outside ball users in their draft age bracket. Ablett, Swallow, Prestia and O'Meara (whilst being elite talents) are not inside mids, the only true IM they have is Rischitelli, who is currently 26.

The only other player I see Gold Coast taking instead of Viney is Toumpas.

Interesting to read everyone's views though - hell if I was a Melb fan and we finished 16th, I would be hoping that GWS take Grundy, then GC nominate Viney!!!

They are all capable of getting there own contested ball imo, i thought Prestia was more an inside type rather than outside if anything? and Ablett Swallow and O'Meara are just super elite players who can play anywhere in the midfield. Selling them all short by saying Rischa is GC only true inside player

Its a big call for either GWS or GC to nominate JV. He would need to be clear no.1 or 2. Mathews said earlier this year that the Lions had bad luck in the Murphy draft as he was a very clear no.1 that draft and Carlton had no problems committing to him at NO1.Mathews said that if there had been 2 or 3 players roughly equal then Carlton would not have been willing to committ and he would have landed at the Lions.
The point here is that if JV is nominated its because he is a clear no1 or 2 then at 3 the Dees get a bargain.
The other issue is that it is a real risk for GWS, GC and the Dees to burn/use a top 3 pick before trade month and the mini draft. Cannot take advantage of any opportunities that arise or circumstances change.
If GC nominate JV and he is not a clear top 3 then the Dees will see this as a great opportunity to let him pass and effectively get picks 2 and 3.What a win! GWS will be desperate to get one of the Dees picks through the mini draft so i would expect that Martin or Hogan would be on the table with some loose change back for the Dees - mid/late first round depending on how desperate GWS are.
Last year GC had nothing to lose giving away pick 4 - there were no immediate performance demands by supporters like there are with the established clubs. Adelaide had a good list that just had a bad year under coach who probably had been there to long.
I know that Martin and Hogan are 'potential'guns but so are a number of kids at the pointy end of this years draft. The point i make here is that GWS might not do as well with the mini this year.
If GC use their first pick on JV then that will be also good for the WB's as they have that extra pick as well. Can't see Port using their first pick for the mini as they will be hoping Toumpas or Grundy slip though.

just curious, lets say that gcs bid on viney at the f/s bidding, do melbourne have to counter bid on the spot or can they wait to see how the draft pans out first?
reasons because if they knew that gws would take grundy then they wouldn't bid but if gws takes whitfield then they would bid.

They have to counter bid on the spot. Which is the first day of the trading period.

Seeing as how melbourne have had Viney at their club for 12 months and have an agreement in place they should be forced to take him with their 1st pick - as thats where he was when they commited to the agreement.

Makes a mockery of the system if they commit then go back on their agreement !

agreed i just can't see melbourne not honoring that agreement, its not about getting the best player to melbourne its about melbourne maintaining integrity.
