interim captain

Has to be someone from the leadership group. Extenuating circumstances or not, why else do we have them there? for show?

This year is all about development and Irel said it best, could be a massive slap in the face and a vote of no-confidence to choose Blacky.

The current leadership group are all leaders in training.
Obvious to all and sundry that Black and Power stood
aside only to elevate the youngsters. They are however
not leaders in training but proven leaders. I see no benefit in
rotating anyone. At this time more than ever the team needs
a single constant guide and elder statesman rather than a young peer filling in.
Would be happy for either Power or Black but only one or the other.
Can't have "umm who's skipper this week?"
The rest of the leadership group can continue to fill their respective rolls.
Am sure they will be looking to Black and Power for guidance anyway.

Who says we "can't"?....just because that is the "usual" way of doing things doesn't mean we have to follow suit..

These are different circumstances, and I really think everyone will understand if Black takes over....and if any of the younger ones gets their noses out of joint, well too bad.....suck it up sunshine, thems the breaks!

Their turn will come..

...but for the moment, there is a lot more at stake....and we need solid steady leadership..on and off the field..

Does anyone really think Black is going to do anything different if he isn't named captain while Brown is out?

All appointed Black as captain while Brown is out does is say that the current leadership group isn't up to scratch and is more likely to do more harm than good. Black can still be a great leader to the team but we are more likely to gain from testing a player out with the responsibility than relying on Black.

.

What are you suggesting, that he will lead the team anyway?
That sends mixed messages as I would expect most would follow his leadership which undermines the interim captain and confuses the team.
He won't neccesarily need to do too much differently but he would be
seen differently. Why appoint someone else as captain while most are looking to Black for leadership?
That can create division, not in an over the top loyalty kind of way, but certainly some will want his leadership rather than another.
Granted that may occur with any appointment at any club, but the question was who we all think should get the gig. To say it won't make a difference if he is not appointed I think is shortsighted.
As I alluded to at the top it is not just how Black may approach things, but how the captain (him or another) might be seen and the influence that has on the team. Merret and Jed are vice captains, let them be vice captains.

Also as previously posted, I think Power or Black would be equally suitable.

That's what i said earlier. Yes, named as captain or not, Black is going to have a huge influence in leading the side whilst Brown is out. If he is going to act as a shadow captain, why not just make it bloody official. Our leadership group isn't picked because they are ready to be captains, they are picked to learn to be leaders. Out of the bunch only Adcock and Merrett are capable of being captains, but personally i'd rather see Black given the job.

I would be a lot more shattered as a young bloke, being named captain and then basically having someone else do it for me. If you name someone captain, they are there to do the job, and Black and Power are by far the most qualified, leadership group or not.

Exactly what I was thinking.. Could not have put it better myself.

A role of a Vice Captain is to fill in the for Captain should he/she not be available. Stock standard in any sporting arena - why should this be any different.

Should none of our Vice Captains be Vice Captains?

Lets see who stands up in the heat of battle.

LUCKLESS Brisbane is set to bank on young deputies Jed Adcock and Daniel Merrett sharing the Lions captaincy until Jonathan Brown returns from horrific facial injuries.

On a day the Lions received a boost with Brent Staker set for a return in the second half of the season after having LARS surgery on his knee, the club held off rushing former captain Simon Black into an inexperienced leadership group.

Good decision. It's not as if Black needs the title of Captain to continue showing his leadership on and off the field, however this will be great experience for Merrett and Adcock to lead out the side and stand up now that they are senior players.

As bad as last week was, I can't wait for this week. Watching the kids play last week was great, nothing better than watching your future side show some class and courage.

i commend the club for making this decision, it is the right one, these guys need to be seen to be showing leadership in brownies absence, they have that opportunity. They will only learn from the experience, and be better for it.

It's not like Blacky won't be there in the background anyways. I'm sure he's always helping out the younger blokes around the club and I don't see why this would make it any different.

I'd like the idea of co-captains instead of rotation to keep some structure going.

Best of luck to Browny for a speedy recovery. We've coped without him before and will have to cope without him again (in the not too distant future for good) and it might be a good learning experience.

While Bownie is out we need another captain. Simon Black is the standout candidate. If ever anyone has earn't the right to captain a club............

Gotta come clean. I was wrong. The leadership shown last night by Jed & Sauce was outstanding, and set the tone for our spirited effort.

What was particularly pleasing about the game was the effort for the entire 120 minutes, & coming so close, with minimal input from Black & Power. The next generation is learning to stand up.:thumbsu:

Have to agree with this. I was also of the thought that Simon should come back into leadership (and freely admit I'm not objective when it comes to him) but have to say that Jed and Rog in particular have stood up brilliantly, especially last night.
