Because my dad is stupid and lazy and does not want to switch his email address... I'm on the 60gig bigpond cable plan.

We started on the 10gig plan, but we'd usually get capped after 6 days. So recently we moved to the 20gig plan. Again it finished in 6-8 days. So now we are on the 60gig bigpond cable plan. Even though I want to be on the 60gig iinet adsl2+ plan (way cheaper). :(

We're paying through our noses $129 per month or something. Geeze sometimes old people are stupid.

Cable Extreme (17mbit+) 60gig (15cents per meg over :s)... $129pm

I love my superfast iinet connection, I recommend them to anyone, or Westnet if you are a little computer illiterate and need good service.
iinet or westnet or internode are possibly the three leading adsl providers at the moment.

$80/m gets me 60gb downloads (20/40 on/off) and voip (which i don't use) been a customer for a long time now (nearing 4 years) and have been thoroughly satisfied entire time. Dialup plans were great, Adsl plans have been the best, service is the best, customer service generally needs improvements (true of all companies), but otherwise is truely fantastic, and I haven't had any downtime in 8 months I think, possibly longer...
iinet ftw...

TPG is very good value, but it has persistent problems at 1.30-3am. Plus they went down for an entire day not so long ago.

I'm with them at the moment, and I'm not planning on switching since I love having generous d/l limits...but it's not perfect.

I'm thinking about TPG, but I don't have a phoneline. Can I do that through these guys or will I need a phoneline through another company first?

And what are these problems at 1:30-3?

if you need a phone line I sugges you go with IINet, I also suggest you read up about phoneline-less ADSL, they have in in europe, its where the household doesn't need a line subscription to receive an adsl signal (not sure how they do it tho).

IINet plans may seem expensive at first, but I highly recommend you bundle a lower level plan with VOIP, +$10, double download limit, speeds up to 24000kb(bits)ps (3.5~4mb/s download, but you will never get that in australia, i get ~800kb/s max and its always connected roughly 8000~9000 kb(bits)ps)

First question tho, what is your spend limit and what will you do mostly?
And two - do not ever consider Telstra/Optus/AAPT etc. I will explain why later if you need.

Are you stupid, TPG have 25GB worth of Usage on ADSL 2+ for just $50 a month.
had TPG as my original adsl provider, very good value plans, but their major problem was their networked sucked donkey balls, always had downtime throughout the week and could barely maintain a connection longer than 12~14 hours.

don't know if they have remedied such problems since, but I still wouldn't go to them.

edit:
after looking at their peaks I wouldn't recommend them to heavy users, their off peak is only 6 hours, 1am/7am and 3am/9am, iiNet has a 10 hour 2am/12pm

Totally agree, iinet FTW if you are getting it with iiphone. Westnet if you are not so skilled at computers and want the support.

Periodically poor connection. Doesn't happen all the time but happens enough that you notice it.
You'll still be able to connect, it's just speeds tend to drop to annoyingly low levels.

I'd call TPG regarding the phoneline, no idea. They do provide VoIP though, which is good but comes with it's faults also. For e.g. I've often had trouble with the 13xxxx business numbers (like banks) and some international numbers.

You're right about their reliability issues, and I probably wouldn't recommend them for a business. But for personal use I'll take the occasional dropouts and the saved $15-20/month.

As for the peak/off-peak deal, TPG offers 30+20 on ADSL2 for $60 with VoIP. I personally prefer 30 peak + 20 offpeak than 20+40.

With the speeds that ADSL2 gets, 6hrs a night is more than enough time to d/l 20 gigs. Hell, one night is probably enough to d/l 20 gigs :p

20+40 is better suited.
I can get up at 7am, set my downloads to run till 12.
and the peak starts at 2am.

With TPG if you wake up at 7am, you are already using your main peak. The reason I said i wouldn't recommend for heavy users is because you are guaranteed to use your main peak first everytime.

Pretty much the opposite for me. I have a list of stuff to d/l every month, and I let it run overnight for the first couple of nights, until the 20 gigs expire. Then I can use the peak 30gigs at my leisure (watching sports online, etc...).

Which plan you would prefer depends greatly on when your core usage occurs. If it's 7am-12pm, then iinet sounds good. But I'm either sleeping or at uni at those times, so for me TPG is the better option.

Anyone here on the 40+110? I'll probably switch over once I get a new hard-drive. :thumbsu:

telstra 3-4 years ago and even before then had the 10gb cable plan, which used to actually be unlimited. They didn't have any shaping software, or any monitoring software to charge for extra usage, basically everyone i knew who had it downloaded up to several hundred gb a month of crap.

Optus Unlimited 12GB Peak / 24GB Off-Peak.

This plan just isn't cutting it for me anymore, I'm already at 60% Peak. :(

the worst thing about telstra, is when you break out of a contract, you have to pay cancellation fee + the remainder of the contract.
iiNet has 6 month break out policy, after 6 months you can disconnect for $60, before 6 months its a bit more, but you don't have to pay the remainder.

I am with AAPT have wireless broadband, we also have unlimited downloads or at least a decent amount and if we exceed whatever the limit is we go back to dial up speed until the end of the month.

It's about $40 a month.

Iam with Optus, they are shithouse. We pay like 40 bucks for 2 gig, 4 gig off peak.

I have the same plan. No complaints so far, being that I'm not really an excessive downloader the limit doesn't bother me. 2gb + 4gb is good enough for me... hey, at least Optus cable is faster than a lot of the other ISPs. Bigpond is shit in comparison for speed and your money's worth.
