Allrighty. I’ve managed to get pretty intoxicated and sunburnt (yes sunburnt!!!!TODAY!!!!!) throughout the day so perhaps my report is a lil off.
The game was played between the ‘Steel Blue Probable’ Tigers and the ‘White Jumpered Possibles’.
A confusing decision as the Steel Blue team was pretty much our ‘A’ squad and the White team were more like the Funky Squad.. In other words they’d be hell keen on the dancefloor, but as opposition they had no realistic chance of coming near the Steel Blues.
Final Scoreline read something like 170 to about 49. It was a massacre. No doubt the Steel Blues had all the talent and the play but the Whities put in a brave show for a severely talent lacking squad.
This is a lil perplexing.. I expected to see our best forwards against our best backs, alas it wasn’t to be. Instead we had our best forwards against our 4th and 5th picked defenders.
Richo kicked something like 6.6 to ¾ time and didn’t play the last quarter. He also strayed 2 outta bounds on the full shots. To be fair, Richo’s opponent for most of the game was Archibald, and no offence meant to Archibald, but he simply isn’t up to minding a player like Richo.
Overall Richo, to me, looked like he had slimed down slightly, i.e. he don’t have the ’04 gullet anymore. He moved free and without restriction and looked strong and confident in a contested situation.
Enough about Richo…. I’ll talke about some recruits who I saw in the flesh for the very first time, today.
Daniel Jackson. I’ve been a huge rap for this guy more on instinct. He didn’t really let me down today, though I believe I also expected something a lil unreasonable.
He wasn’t as fast as I imagined. Don’t get me wrong he isn’t slow, but to the naked eye he appears like he has heavyish legs… I’d subtley compared him to M. Voss.. Perhaps at this stage it would be more fair to compare him to a super-young Justin Leppitch with the potential still to be anything. He chases hard and has fast reaction time, and appears to read the play very well for his age. Let’s hope he knows how to control an ego, because I haven’t been the only one rating him.
Richard Tambling. WOW. I don’t think I saw much mega-magic from him today but I saw enough to know that for someone his age that he has the goods and smarts to play 150-200+ games at the highest level.
He did an absolute sensational chasedown tackle on Hartigan in the 2nd quarter that won him a holding the ball free. This was the highlight of the arvo and the crowd appreciated it by giving him the most hearty cheer for the match in this play.
Unfotunatley Tambo sprayed it for a behind but on the kickout we again had Hartigan way in front of Tambling and it almost became a repeat of the previous play but Hartigan was able to get the ball away safely to a team mate.
I was super impressed with Tambo’s 2nd and 3rd efforts. He doesn’t stay on the ground, straight back up and chasing his man like he just stole his VB.
Brett Deledio. Hard for me to judge as I didn’t seem to see much of what he did, though the people around me assured me he had been pretty damn good. At times I thought he was out positioned and not quite ‘in the game’, but as I said I think I may have missed a bit of his work, so cant fairly judge.
The one thing that Super Impressed me with Deledio was his kicking. Sublime kicking skills.. Low, sharp and on target. His accurate passing was responsible for at least 2 goals in the 4th quarter. He has poise and balance in a Joelish kinda way.. I just didn’t notice him enough to make a fair assessment of one game.. (I also got him confused with a certain D. Kellaway on more that one occasion. From the other end of the ground, he looked lil like DK to me.. The No. 3 may have helped this.
Roach & Raines. I put these two together as I think they did exactly what they should’ve. They are showing an improvement on last year and to me, appear ready to step up. They seemed comfortable at Tigerland and appear like they both have an inner belief that they are ready for AFL football.
David Rodan was fairly impressive playing out of a centre position. He played there almost the entire game and started in a flash. Still appears to not be to sure on decision making, taking 1 or 2 bounces and being a lil lost. Against better opposition he will be run down by better players. But I think he looked fit, solid and hard at it. He has the skills, it remains to be seen whether he has the decision making abilites at the top level. He certainly has the speed and the desire by the way he played.. Could be a smokey for the B&F.
Mark Coughlan: Who, where? Apparently he was in there and did a few things, but I must admit I didn’t see him. Exactly how bad is his injury?
Greg Tivendale. The comment was made by someone very close by me.. ‘Tivvas must be in a contract year’. He probably is, and he played well today. My estimate had him picking up around 35+ touches. Very busy off the wing, but not once throught the game could I work out who his opponent was.. I don’t think he had one.. Much like Bowden who played ok, but wouldn’t have been in the best.
Mark Graham. appeared to be one of the most vocal out there, and seemed quite comfy slottin in at Tigerland. Played in the backline and also floated forward and was used as a Full Forward in the last ¼ and did a reasonable job. Not that I’d put him there in a real game, but they were resting Richo, so….
I was fairly impressed with Graham and think he has, and will, add a lot to Richmond this year.
Kellaway & Gaspar. Nothing new to say.
Troy Simmonds is a fine replacement for the Donut and I think he will be damaging.
Could continue to write about moe players but as Im typing this on a train it is becoming frustrating, especially combining this with the fact Im pretty toxicated.
- My simple thoughts and I stress simple…
· Appeared silly to put our best players directly against our lower players.. I expected to see our best Fwds on our best Backs but this didn’t happen.
· Rory Hilton was coaching the white side.. What’s all that about?
· Kane Johnson is a workhorse. Played well, but Im not sold on the Capt idea.
Might add more later when I remember as Im pulling into station and have to shut dow|\|
