Half-time

White 5.6 (Gamble 2, Wojcinski 2, Simpkin)
Blue 6.3 (Bartlett 2, Mooney 2, Tenace 1, Stokes 1)

2 questions.

1. How do you get the reports on the net so quick what have you got your lap top at the ground?

2. Who is Bartlett, pretty sure Kevin is not playing?

Cheers for the reports, good for those of us at work.

Yeah, not sure I've heard of this fella before!

Look forward to a full report.

THE RACE to replace premiership player Nathan Ablett as Geelong’s full forward began in earnest yesterday in the club’s intra-club match at Skilled Stadium. And it appears to be a battle of the Toms after Tom Hawkins and VFL grand final hero Tom Lonergan were given the key positions for much of the match.

Each showed glimpses of form and made it on to the scoreboard but Hawkins was let down by some errant kicking at goal. Both players should get their chance to impress further next Saturday against Melbourne in the Cats’ opening NAB Cup clash.

Hawkins and Lonergan spent three quarters of the scratch match at full-forward on opposing teams before Lonergan was switched on to Hawkins’ side in the final term.
But it was dual premiership veteran Cameron Mooney who reminded them who was the Cats’ reigning key forward, with three goals from centre half-forward.
Superstar Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel went one better with four goals, one in each quarter.
The match was an interesting case study, being the Cats first real hit-out since grand final day.
Premiership stars were pitted against each other, while a number of the club’s VFL premiership players were also out to impress.

Gary Ablett found the going tough against one of the best stoppers in the business in Cameron Ling.
Ablett gave Ling an almighty shove at the opening bounce, setting the tone for a fierce contest all day between the two All-Australians.
Both players found more room in the second half with Ablett’s sizzling third term the highlight of the day.
Ling also had some fine moments, including a sublime long kick to set up a goal in the third term.
Corey Enright fronted up to Norm Smith Medallist Steve Johnson and had the better of the duel, particularly in the first half. Johnson was back to his dangerous best in the third term, but next to a different opponent.

Bartel, Brad Ottens and David Wojcinski were the best of the rest, but most of the top players on the park showed enough to suggest the Cats will again be hard to beat in 2008.
The only scare for the club came when Ottens went down briefly after a heavy collision at half-back. But he returned after half time seemingly unaffected.
The Cats also unveiled a couple of their NAB AFL Draft recruits in Harry Taylor, Scott Simpson and Dawson Simpson.
Simpson, 18, is a mountain of a young man but found life difficult matched up on Ottens.
Taylor started the match as a key defender on Mooney but lowered his colours to the taller opponent.

Ten Cats sat out Saturday’s match: Matthew Egan (foot), Matthew Scarlett (knee), Darren Milburn (family commitments), Paul Chapman (groin), Joel Selwood (general soreness) Travis Varcoe (tonsils), Simon Hogan (stress reaction in his foot), Brodie Moles (rookie being rested) and Shane Mumford (rested rookie).

Of those, Scarlett, Egan and Chapman will all miss the opening round of the NAB Cup.

I was down there for the first half. Moons and Hawkins were playing in tandem for most the first half on Taylor and Mackie respectively, and seemed to alternate between FF and CHF. Hawkins didn't kick any but set a few up, while Moons struggled early but then got on a few strong leads and marked strongly. Hawkins seems a lot fitter this year. At one stage he chased the opposition out of the forward 50 to centre wing at full pace and didn't seem to be too puffed afterwards.

Djerrkura played well. Seems to have bulked up a bit more over the pre-season and busted open a few packs which was good to see. Have a feeling he will take Byrnes' spot this year, as Byrnes didn't exactly set the world on fire. Had a chuckle at some guys behind me talking about Byrnes. The senior players all wore numbers on their back while a few others, who I assume were VFL listed players, had no numbers. At one stage Byrnes was matched up with one of the VFL squad, and someone behind me said "That's how much they rate Byrnes here. Putting him on a no-namer." :p

Was interesting to see Harley play on Stokes. Guess they're going to use Harley on small forwards again this year, although he did go onto Mooney while Taylor was having a spell. Prismall has bulked up a fair bit too and got a few centre clearances. Ling was playing on Gaz, Ling with a headband and Gaz was wearing a cap. :D Other interesting match-ups were SJ on Enright and Corey on Kelly.

Bartel and Corey don't seem to have missed a beat at all. West, Dawson Simpson and Ottens were rotating in the ruck. Don't know where Blake was. Don't know if it's because of his size or if he was carrying an injury of some sort, but D.Simpson didn't seem to be very mobile at all, although in his defence he was up against two very mobile ruckmen in West and Ottens.

Chapman, Milburn, Varcoe, Egan and Scarlett were other notable absentees.

I only got to see the 2nd half, sat near the goals at the city end. That's the way the wind was going.

In the third quarter the white or light blue team was going to the city end, so I got to see a fair bit of their forward line. Lonergan looked good, as did Scott Simpson. Simpson took one strong mark one on one and on another occasion led from deep in the forward line to basically the wing to receive a kick from Ling, and then handballed to Ling again to keep the ball moving. He looks in good nick and seems to have good body shape for a draftee. On the other hand, Dan McKenna (#41?) seemed fairly skinny.

In the final term I got a good look at the forward line of the blue team, consisting of Mooney and Hawkins. Moons only played for the first half of this quarter, while Hawkins got a free 20 metres out (shocking kick for goal with this one) and then again marked on the lead after a good kick from Tenace (shot on goal missed again but much closer). Harry Taylor was playing on Moons, and he seems to have a nice left foot kick (found Lingy? on a 40metre kick-out).

The Ling v S.Johnson 'fight' in the centre was funny, but I don't remember Johnno being taken off for it. A couple of mins earlier at the city end forward line Johnno had the ball and basically put his head into Ling's chest as Lingy tackled him and won a free through staging. Ling not happy, told the ump to "have a look at the replay", all the crowd around this had a good laugh.

Dawson Simpson, while big, needs a few pre-seasons to get his fitness up.

For me the regular mids looked really good, irrespective of which team - ie. Corey, Bartel, GAblett, Enright, Kelly.

Otto, too, looked good.

I'm thinking they'll play a mix of experience and kids next week. Will post more if anything comes to mind.
