Sydney Sixers allrounder has reportedly attracted plenty of interest from Indian franchises

The KFC T20 Big Bash League continues to propel Australia's cricketing talents onto the world stage and the spotlight of the Indian Premier League.

At least 17 Australians are set to feature in the eighth edition of the tournament in April and May after their IPL franchises renewed contracts.

A further seven – including Australia's T20 captain Aaron Finch – were released back into the player auction.

Joining Finch in the auction is an expected swathe of Australian talent from the BBL including run-scoring machines Tim Ludeman and Travis Head, rising fast bowling whiz Jason Behrendorff, leg-spinner Adam Zampa and allrounder Sean Abbott.

A report in the Mumbai Mirror said at least two franchises were interested in bidding on Abbott, who made his Australian T20 and one-day international debuts last October against Pakistan in the UAE.

Abbott, who has taken six wickets for the Sydney Sixers this season, has registered for next month's IPL auction with a base price of 50 Lakh ($100,000) but could expect his services to reap considerably more.

"He makes cricket sense. Top officials of two IPL franchisees said Abbott would definitely be picked up by a team," the Mirror's report said.

The interested franchises were not identified, claiming revealing their interest "could compromise their teams' strategy at the auction".

One possible suitor could be the Mumbai Indians, who will be coached by former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting in 2015, with former Black Caps quick Shane Bond as the bowling coach.

Abbott has been a man on the rise since winning the Steve Waugh Medal as New South Wales best player in 2013-14. It saw him earn his limited overs caps against Pakistan and he played a further two T20s against South Africa in November.

Abbott's red-ball form has also been impressive this summer, with his six wickets routing Queensland in the first Bupa Sheffield Shield game at the SCG after the tragic death of Phillip Hughes.

Mitchell Johnson is set to be the top-earning Australian at IPL8, with Kings XI Punjab renewing his contract after purchasing him for $1.2m in 2014.

Kings XI have also retained Glenn Maxwell ($1.1m) and George Bailey ($645,000).

Rajasthan Royals are again set to be the team with the heaviest Australian influence, with five Aussies retained for their 2015 squad.

Steve Smith, Shane Watson, James Faulkner, Kane Richardson and Ben Cutting will all return to India for the tournament which is due to start a week after the World Cup final.

Australians in IPL8:

Retained players: Nathan Coulter-Nile (Delhi), George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh (KXIP), Chris Lynn, Pat Cummins (KKR), Josh Hazlewood (Mumbai), Shane Watson, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith (Rajasthan), Mitchell Starc, Nic Maddinson (RCB), David Warner, Moises Henriques (Hyderabad).

Released players: Ben Hilfenhaus, John Hastings, David Hussey (CSK), Michael Hussey, Ben Dunk (Mumbai), Brad Hodge (Rajasthan), Aaron Finch (Hyderabad).

not really interested in how much each player goes for, or where they go but,
will be interesting to see if David Hussey gets picked up. a gun t20 player but has to be nearly on his last legs.
hoping the ever green Brad Hodge goes around again, but could be effected by his injury by his arm still
the player im most look forward to keeping an eye on is travis Head, not only he is one of the bright batting prospects for Australian cricket, im hoping he gets picked up by the Deli Daredevils, to he can play in the same team as Quinton De Kock the SA young gun. hopefully they have many lengthy batting partnerships so we can listen to the commentators have to trying to get around De Kock & Head :drunk:

The only part of the IPL I care about. Love it when every couple of years almost all the players are thrown back into the auction and the auction goes for two days.

The Daredevils, who I am sticking with for reasons unknown, have the most $$$ to spend as we were easily the most ruthless in getting rid of players, namely Karthik and Pietersen who we spent millions on.

Must put us in the prime position to secure Finch, and I hope we look at Behrendorff to. Could pair him with NCN!

Would like to see Behrendorff come to my KKR, but not that I really watch the games or anything.
Would be great if fox sports would pick it up, would get a fair few viewers.

Yeah, not a huge fan of T20, but I'd watch the odd game here and there, especially the Kolkata matches.

If the Caribbean Premier League and the Indian Super League (soccer) can get enough viewers, surely the IPL would!

who cares, just stream the games. there are full replays, full highlight packages
Well I'd watch a lot more of it if it was on TV, and I'm sure most would.

The auction is awesome. It's probably the only time in the game where players market value can be assessed on a global basis.

Clearly franchise requirements and team balance are factors in driving prices, but it's probably as close as it gets given the imbalances in cricket board contracts worldwide.

How would you explain Glen Maxwell then?

Not really on an ability or performance basis. The money is thrown at two things: Indian-ness and hype. Because that's what pays off in this competition.

the auction is shit.

never any continuity from one season to the next, you don't know who plays for who. i'd like to watch the IPL but most of the time i don't know who i'm watching because players keep getting auctioned and re-auctioned.

i wish they could have some kind of draft system. worst team gets the first pick, best team gets the last pick...with trades allowing you to move up/down in the draft.

Myth. Well, partly.

Chennai have had the same players for the most part, Mumbai have had the same core all the way through (Sachin before, Rohit, Pollard...), Rajhastan and Kohli are near synonymous with each other. Funnily enough they are probably the most consistent sides as well.

It is the ones like Delhi who are guilty of what you say that consistently struggle.

It's interesting though. Only part of the IPL I really follow.

Nah, that would risk tanking. You wouldn't want to sully the good name of sub-continental cricket with teams that deliberately go out to lose. Wait, wut? :drunk:

My favourite part of the IPL season :)

Wonder which unknowns that will turn out to be guns my Royals will pick up this year
