Cost adds risk to 'Irish experiment'
By Catherine Murphy 5:24 PM Fri 08 August, 2008
ADELAIDE football manager John Reid says the cost of getting involved in the Irish experiment means the Crows will be cautious in deciding whether to sign either of the Gaelic footballers currently undergoing trials at the club.
County Louth’s Brian Donnelly and Dublin’s Karl Dias have been undergoing physical and psychological testing at West Lakes as well as skills trials so the club can assess their adaptability to AFL.
The will return home to Ireland next week and then the Crows will make a decision as to whether to sign the Irishmen.
“It’s a very, very, very expensive exercise. Most of the clubs that have been involved in this (the Irish experiment) to any extent have had it funded from outside sources and not actually out of their footy department fund. We haven’t got those funds so to do it we’ve got to be pretty certain, even though you’ll never be one hundred per cent [sure], it’s still long odds,” Reid said.
“Really you’re talking a 60 or 70 thousand dollar-a-year exercise per player. It’s a lot of money to spend on a whim. They’re not a cheap exercise and it’s probably even a two or three year exercise before you know if you’ve got yourself a player.”
Reid said the failure of some Irish recruits to adapt to the game would also make the club wary. Cork’s Michael Shields is the most recent recruit to return home after deciding AFL was not for him.
“There are plenty of guys that have come out here and gone back. There’s just a few who have made it so we’ve still got out toe in the water of this exercise…We have to decide whether we’re a realistic chance of turning them into an AFL player. And even then we’ll know that will be a risk.”
Reid revealed that Donnelly and Dias were not contractually bound to pursue a football career with Adelaide if they are deemed capable of making it. However Reid said the pair had given a verbal agreement that if they decided to pursue a professional footy career, it would be with the Crows.
“They’ve given us an undertaking on that,” Reid said.
The football manager said he had rejected the opportunity to sign up for Ricky Nixon’s much-publicised recruiting network in preference of an in-house policy.
“We’d rather put our own toe in the water with this because we’re not really certain how far we want to go with it. This exercise of having them here is about getting as much information as we can before we make any decisions.”
Reid complimented both Donnelly and Dias on their approach to the trials so far.
“They’re great lads. They’ve showed great commitment to it all but it’s early days yet.”

Missed the channel 9 story, did they mention the heights of the lads?
No they didn't, but I just watched a recording of 9 news and Donnelly, the taller of the 2, would be at least 193 cms (6'4") by the looks of him and Diaz looked about 180 cms (roughly Campbell's height).
They appeared to be staying with Moran, who thinks they have the ability to make it - although I wouldn't put too much reliance on that, as that was probably said within earshot of them.
Just on the brief grabs that we got of them training, the taller one Donnelly looked the more likely type, being very quick and agile for his size. He's rather thin though and if successful would have to spend a pre-season at McDonald's to fill out.
Diaz on the other hand faces the bigger battle to make it IMO as he is slightly on the small side and has to learn all the skills of AFL footy to go with that.[/quote]
I agree if the crows could only pick one it would probably be donnelly
Judging by the crows record of picking between 2 eligible players I would go with the one they don't think they should go for.
who were you thinking of?
The choice of Porplyzia vs Grima for the PSD pick back in late 2005 springs to mind. Nothing against Grima, but Porps has been an absolute gun.
Didn't we delist Porps? Then draft him again later? You could argue that wasn't the right pick, and we should have just taken him when his body had sorted itself out ...
Of course, without the shock of being drafted and delisted, he may never have sorted himself out ...
just anounced on channel 10 that the crows are set to rookie list brian donnely nxt year.
