Is it a bit strange that the financial future of an AFL club hinges on merging with an SANFL one?

This is the one thing I dont quite understand about the "One" merger. How can merging with an SANFL club that is broke ensure an AFL club will survive. Sounds a bit backwards to me.

I am not againt it, as I can see that the Magpies need the merger to survive. I am sure I will still enjoy watching the Magpies run around at Alberton Oval (or Footy Park), knowing that without them the Power would not exist. Just as the case was in 1997.

It's about getting all the pieces in place for the Crows/Power merger in 2015.

It's been a tough life for the Port Magpies. Created to replace the PAFC after it moved to the AFL the Port Maggies were forced to start life at Ethelton and they have struggled ever since even though the original club gave them a bit over a million dollars to get them going.

The benefits of bringing the Port family under one administration include savings on administrative costs and the relocation of poker machines to a proper money spinning location plus the fact that there are sponsorship dollars waiting to be given after One Port becomes a reality. Leaving aside the increased sponsorships the merger of administrations is expected to deliver between $1.4 and $1.9 million to the clubs bottom line. Those figures are not just based on projections done by Port but attested to by the SANFL.

I hope, Geoffa, that you're not going to be too distressed in five or ten years time when the Port Maggies become the PAFC's reserves side. It will happen you know despite whatever is being said now.

BTW the other big piece of the rejuvenation of Port's finances is the move to a city stadium.

I don't get any of it...and deep down neither do they.
The only thing that will save their arses is more supporters. At the moment thy're getting 20,000 when they SAID back in the day they'd get 35000.

Seems to me they are hoping like Joe Buggery that somewhere or another there are 15000 Port supporters itching to go to a game in town.

They'll agree to all these conditions too, then in five years time, they'll start whinging all over again. Just like they are doing with the initial agreement - more than happy to sign off on that then - now it's the reason for their demise apparently. Only thing that has really changed since then is the number of Port supporters not going to games.
