This is an idea out of left field... VERY out of left field... does anyone think it's possible Shane Warne deliberately sabotaged his own cricket career?

After 12 years of extensive touring, both here and abroad, here's a bloke who would not have seen very much of his family. He is expected to be a role model for millions of other people's kids, at the expense of his own. His behaviour at times has shown he may not be the ideal role model, so maybe that's an extra bit of pressure he's been expected to live up to and is out of his depth at maintaining a clean-cut image.

How does a champion cricketer, in very good form, tell his personal sponsors and teams that he doesn't have the heart to go on? What contractual obligations might he have to fulfil? How does he get out of it?

Taking a banned substance is probably an automatic two year ban. Trying to excuse it with a half-arsed story about ignorance doesn't eradicate the guilt or the ban, but may (in his eyes) avoid the slur of being a (performance enhancing) drugs cheat. Suspended but only partly disgraced, much less ignominy than would be suffered for a positive steroid result.

Financially I suspect he would be very much set for life. No need to play on.... besides, after a few years off there's always the media to turn to.

Whether it be a two year break or a permanent one, does anyone think Warne may have had this in mind when taking the "one tablet"?

In a word - no.

Warnie has ruined any real chance he had of working after cricket in the media, something I'm sure he wanted to do.

Also the Age story today seems to confirm that he was taking more than 1 pill, he was clearly on the roids to get over his shoulder injury.

I think the simple explanation is the bloke wanted to go out on a high winning the World Cup, and nothing was going to stand in his way, not even a serious injury or the rules.

For him to come out with this story about one pill from his Mum, only to be exposed today, shows what a sad fraud the man is. Obviously someone forgot to tell him not only can a test prove you took drugs, it can also tell how much you took.

My respect for the man goes down further and further - I'm even beginning to wonder whether he did accept cash from Salim.

many doctor,s were suprised at his "speedy"recovery.and i guess now the whole cricket world will start wondering the samething.
if your man enough warnie tell the truth many legends of the game have supported you through this believing it was an honest mistake.keep rubbing their face in it and you.ll end up a very lonely figure in cricket circles in years to come.

cheers!

I disagree I wouldnt be suprised if he is commentating next summer. The fans still love him and he has a great cricket mind so nine will keep him on I reckon.

but rich darky, but at least you are thinking outside the square. remember its the same bloke who chucked a hissy fit and claimed he'd retire after getting dropped from the test team. his outstanding performance in the latter stages of the 1999 world cup final changed his mind and he wanted to continue on.

remarkably (and some would argue co-incidentally) his current shoulder injury only lasted a matter of weeks, whereas his previous injury had him out for ages, and spent years getting back to bowling what he once was.

a good point is raised here. the more warnie's lies are exposed, the more egg on their face his teammates will have on their face for standing steadfastly behind him.

the likes of Gilchrist, Waugh and Ponting have all come out and adamantly claimed that he is no drug cheat. he is letting these people down as well with his half-arsed excuses and lies being exposed for what they really are.

Shane Warne had made it clear for quite some time that he wanted 500 wickets he is now on 489 and to hold if only briefly the wicket taking record. If this had not occured I think you'd find Warne retiring at the end of next summet anyway.

hadn't thought about that. a HUGE blow in his career if he is suspended for two years. i'm sure he virtually assumed he was going to pass courtney walsh at some stage and briefly hold the mantle as test crickets greatest ever wicket taker.

by the time he gets back on the international scene (barring him retiring in disgrace), merralichuckin will have passed him and he'd have no hope of catching up.

Well why would he have signed a two year deal to play for Hampshire ?
He could have sat at home in Melbourne and just got fat while waiting for the next international match or Victorian game.

in foresight, taking banned substances to aid in a recovery to ensure a world cup spot at the expense of others, and then flushing them out with diuretics is well worth the risk.

apparantly, diuretics can effectively mask steroid abuse in as little as 20 minutes. i believe ASDA officials usually give an hours notice before a test.

this is a little out of left field as well...

but shane warne, so obsessed with his own vanity, was becoming desperately jealous of John Howand and George Bush hogging all the front pages. This was perhaps the best way, despite an impending war, to get his mug on page 1.

This is one of the things that actually made me think it... what if he finally realised "**** I've got too much on my plate"... just clutching at straws but what's to say his Mrs didn't chuck a wobbly and he needed a quick and definite way to get out of cricket without having to openly try to reneg on contracts... "I don't wan't to honour these contracts so I'm forcing myself out..."
Maybe his retirement from ODI cricket was also to lighten his workload because of the Hampshire contract.

Look, I said at the start it was a very long shot, and it's just one left field scenario out of a thousand possibilities, and I would always say the honest way is the smartest way out of situations, but Warne has shown himself to be dishonest and not too clever at times.. so you never know!

Interesting theory Darky, but very, very doubtful.

Hell, he could have achieved the same effect far more effectively simply by shagging the Steve Waugh's wife in a bathroom at a team-mate's party.
